A Lesson and a Warning.
The shocking tragedy of the
opera house Friday night should
prove a lesson and a warning to
men and boys who have the
pernicious habit of "pistol toting."
A pistol is a weapon designed
solely for the purpose of
taking life?primarily human life
?and great is the pity that such
^ -a weapon was ever invented, especi.
ally the automatic, steel bullet
affair that seems to be the spe-cial
pet and plaything of many
young bloods about town. There
is some excuse for having a pistol
In one's home to protect his
household, hut there its usefulness
ends. As a toy it is a distinct failure,
and statistics show that more
inen who never "pack a gun"
die natural deaths than those
who go armed for self-protection.
The affair at the opera house
is fid indeed. It is by the mercy
of Providence that it was not
far worse. Suppose the hall had
U?n crowded with ladies and
children?think what might have
resulted. The thread of human
life is too brittle to In* imperiled
by stray bullets. Again, we say,,
let this l?e a lesson and a warning.

i KIKGSTREE GRADED AND !
: HIGH SCHOOL NOTES.
*-? ? ? ? ? ? ?
On last Friday Mr Dibble gave a
lecture on "Esperanto" to the High
school. Everyone became very
much interested. A few have about
decided to study this language.
The spelling match between the
third and fourth grades resulted in a
victory for the latter, although
the little third grade pupils did fine
selling. The tenth grade had per- j

it very much.
The library is now open on Monday
and Thursday afternoons from
3:30 to 4:30, Miss Erckmann being
librarian. Each pupil is expected
to attend at least once a week.
Quite a number of pupils have
been suspended on account of
mumps being in their immediate
families.
A Christmas Prersnt That Means
SomethingThere
is one especially good thing
about a Chris :mas present of The
Youth's Companion. It shows that
the giver thought enough of you to
give you something worth while.
It is easy to choose something
costing a great deal which is absolutely
useless, but to choose a present
costing only SI.75 that will provide
a long year's entertainment,and
the uplifting companionship of the
wise and great, is another matter.
There is one present, however, which
does just that?The Youth's Companion.
If you want to know whether it is
appropriate or welcome, just visit
the home of some Companion subscriber
on Companion day.
Do not choose any Christmas present
until you have examined The
Companion. We will send you free
sample copies and the beautiful
Prospectus for 1911, telling something:
of how The Companion has
recently been enlarged and improved.
The one to whom you give the
subscription will receive free all of
the numbers of 1910 issued after the
money is received; also The Companion's
Art Calendar for 1911, lithographed
in twelve colors and gold.
These will be sent to reach the subscriber
Christmas morning.if desired.
You, too, as giver of the subscription,
will receive a copy of the Calendar.
