This week four j communications came up Wednesday morning. We hated to leave any of them out, but with one printer ; short, we simply could not get the, type set without delaying the paper. Special attention is called to tne big advertisement of the Kingstree Hardware Company this week and next week. The "Favorite" range ; cooking demonstration is both in-1 teresting and instructive and every \ house-keeper who can do so should take advantage of Mrs Harris's lectures. Cooking is now a recognized science, and every lady who attends these "demonstrations" will be amply repaid by the hints and pointers I given on practical cooking ? the theory put into practice right before her eyes. Mr J Frank Eppes, now a young attorney of Greenville, is a candidate for the portion of reading j clerk of the House of Representa-, tives. COTTON CROP SHORT. Census Report Shows Over 100,000 Bales Below Last Year. Washington, October 25:?The ! M W McConnell, J F Scott and J D Gilland visited Charleston Sunday. We venture to guess that 1,739 won't miss the population of Kingstree very wide of the mark. Mr W S Camlin, the Record's wide-awake Andrews correspondent, spent the day in town Monday. Dr B M Montgon;*ry, who is attending the State Medical college, Charleston, visited his parents Tuesday. Messrs S H Wilds and Gandy of Darlingtor^ were here yesterday spying out our fertile lands with a view to acquiring some of them. Mrs M R Hemingway, who has been under treatment at an infirmary in Florence, returned home yesterday. She is still quite unwell. Mrs P M Brockinton and children returned to their home near Cades Friday evening after a few days' visit to relatives in the city.?Floret ire Times. Mr and Mrs Alex Hall of New Berne, N C, have moved to Kingstree, and are occupying one of the Kellahan cottages on Academy street Mrs Hall is a daughter of Mr R A Watts, Sr, the well known jeweler. V i Walter Hazard of Georgeto\ called pleasantly to see us Tuesday while in town. Mr Hazard is one of the ablest lawyers of the State and is a polished and courtly gentleman. By the way, i j this contest is warming up and we | shall be surprised if Kingstree's rep- j resentatives do not capture one or ' more of the handsome prizes offered, i Mr R H Kellahan, who has been I quite sick at Hot Springs, Arkansas, for the past two weeks, was able to return home Tuesday night. He was accompanied by Miss Lockamv, his cousin and house-keeper, and stood the long and trying return trip very well indeed. It is hoped that he will soen be restored to his usual health. THE CIRCUS. A Record Breaking Attendance-A Fairly Good Show. The circus has come and gone. Robinson's circus has been coming to Kingstree for half a century and doubtless the show i? bigger and better than ever before. At any rate, it brought more people to Kingstree probably than were ever seen here on any previous occasion, the crowd on the street being estimated all the way from 6,000 to 10,000 people?probably 7,000 would j be nearest the mark. To ascertain j accurately the size of the body of l spectators underneath the "big top" j is of course a matter of impossibiii1 ty, but if the data given us by the ! nress aerent alone: with the show be reliable there were seated under the | canvas on Saturday, October 22, approximately 4,500 men, women and children. The big tent seats 5,100 people and there were not many more than 500 vacant places. The menagerie attached to the ! show was not large, but the animals were fairly good specimens and wellkempt. The herd of six performing elephants was well worth seeing. In the four rings there was always "something doing" and the J chief source of complaint was the ; lack of one or two more sets of eyes ' than the normal person possesses. 'Tne novelty act of the LowandAs, ; Brazilian equestrians who do their j stunts in a tally-ho,excited considerable interest, as did the "dive-toi death" climactic' feat of Linger, j But the strongest feature of the j show is the strong man (no pun inI tended)Warren L Travis. Hisfeat of j lift^ig 14 men standing massed on a j platform is indicative of almost su! per-human powers. There were a number of funny clowns and their antics pleased every one. One thing about the Robinson circus that is highly commendable is the absolute freedom from the gambling, swindling and rowdyism that are too often associated with these traveling shows. If anything of the kind went on here we failed to hear of it. The vast crowd, too, seemed quiet and orderly, all out for a good : time, and we believe they had it. Robinson's circus will always be I welcome in Williamsburg as long as it lives up to its present standard. We are now jobbing staple Dry Goods. When in need of a bolt see us.
