Now and then strange things hap- j *
pen. One day last week a negro ( *
boy actually went to a house in town j *
and asked for a job. And he was J *
in earnest, t?>o. Asking a negro in
this town to work seems to be re >
garded almost in the nature of an
insult, and to have one solicit work j
has been unheard of many a day.
There are no empty stores in this
town. On the contrary the demand
cannot be supplied. So insistent is
the demand for quarters that an ex
beef market has recently been
cleaned up and converted into a mil*
linery store.
F L Will cox, Esq, of Florence was
noted in town one day last wfeek.
Messrs I) M and H V Epps went
to Sumter Monday night to attend
the "old horse" sale of the Southern
Express company Tuesday.
Mrs Geo C Haselton went to
Charleston Saturday on a visit of a
few days.
Mrs J M Sturgeon is in Charleston.
v . "Pat,"who had been building side^w&lks,
went to Florence a few days
ago. He was furnished with so
many orders for pints and quarts to

which to pay for the pints and
quarts, that he concluded that he
did not need to build any more sidewalks
right away. So he did not
come back, and neither the pints
and quarts nor the money have aj ;
peared yet. The boys who met the
Orangeburg train the evening Pat
was expected back went away in
most angelic frames <>f mind. Pockets
empty and stomachs, too.
