Last Thursday Mr G F Stalvey
was called to the bedside of his ^
father, who was said to be extremely
ill at his home near Conway.
Mr J D Duke has returned home (
from a stay of several days at Glenn *
Springs.
Mr J C Young brought into town
last Friday a squash that weighed j
seventy-four pounds! It has been ,
on exhibition since in front of Sauls-!
Baker Co's store. Of course it
was grown right near here on Mr |
Young's farm. Mr G L Sauls says
that pies made from this squash!}
will be on the bill of fare of the' j
Halcyon hotel the opening day.
Mr John Casselman died at his i
home near High Hill on Monday of' t
last week. He was eighty-six years1 {
of age, and his long life was spent
in the same neighborhood in which
he was born and died. He left
three sons and three daughters and i
numerous grand-children. A quiet, (
inoffensive man, a law-abiding citi- j
zen and a kindly neighbor; he pass- f
ed his years "along the cool, sequestered
vale of life." -During his
span of life what changes have taken
place! For instance, he was two ]
years old when Thomas Jefferson
end John Adams died, and he was a i
grown man before there was a rail- i
road in this country. Think of that! s
Mrs A Q Hutchinson died at her 1
home near Anderson's Bridge last j1
Tuesday. Her husband and several!
children remain on this side of the j1
ferry. j <
Mr?Puckett,the new superinten- 1
dent of our school, has arrived with 1
Mrs Puckett, and have taken up
their residence in Charles street. ^
Bettie Gaskins, the youngest j
daughter of Mr and Mrs J H V j
Gaakins, died last Wednesday night, j
This bright and lovable girl was
about twelve years old. She was in
her accustomed place at Sunday- ]
school on last Sunday and was
stricken Monday with the malady
which snuffed out her young life in
a few hours. The funeral services
were held at the Baptist church (
Thursday afternoon and the remains
laid to rest in the Casselman burying
ground, where so many of the >
family sleep their last sleep.
During two days last weeK.inurs- j;
day and Friday, three hundred and i
thirty-two thousand pounds of tobucco
were sold upon this market.
The Thursday sales were the larger ,
of the two, but even the quantity ]
on the floors Friday, one hundred s
and twenty-eight thousand pounds,
would have swamped some markets.
Here the facilities and the men were ,
equal to the occasion and everything
went along smoothly. The
prices were good, the average being j I
