???? ? ? - ' SOMEBODY IIEO" ~ SAYS HODGES, MAKES UGLY CHARGES AGAINST ELLERBE SUPPORTED BY DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE. At Dillon Tuesday of last week v additional interest was injected into the heare 1 Congressional campaign in this district by sensational charges made againsi Hon J E Ellerbe by Mr P A Hodges relative to a circular letter sert out two years ago on the eve of the election accusing Tjodges of having unpaid judgments on record against him and defrauding his creditors. At the time Hodges' charged Ellerbe with being responsible for this letter and according to f I Hodges. Ellerbe not only disclaimed responsibility for it, but denied most emphatically any knowledge of such , a letter prior to its being circulated. | Mr Hodges now presents the evidence tending to show that Mr Ellerbe handed him the "double cross." The account of this feature of the Dillon meeiing, as taken from The State of Wednesday, Jnly 27, follows: "The candidates for Congress are continuing to make it lively in this district and the unexpected and only sensational feature of tqday's meeting was the presentation by F A Hodges of certificates to prove his claim that Congressman Ellerbe had in the campaign two years ago resorted to an eleventh hour attack on Mr Hodges' character. Mr Ellerbe is alleged to have declared a: that time that he was guiltless of any such work, but Mr Hodges today confronted Mr Ellerbe with signed statements, which place the Congressmrn in a very unenviable light, to say the least. Congressman J E Ellerbe has been reported to have the Sixth district "in a sling" in this campaign for re - * J.'J.i, election, out trie opposing canaiuai.es are going after him with a sharp stick. P A Hodges, former mayor of Bennettsville.who ran against Ellerbe two years ago, declared that it j fcsd been a matter of great pride to \him that Mr Ellerbe on nearly every stump had thanked him for the courJ teous manner in which he had conducted his campaign. And yet that at the last minute when he had no chance to defend himself, there was issued surreptitiously an attack upon his integrity and he received rumors that such an attack emanated from | Ellerbe and his friends. Mr Hodges! read his circular letter, which he presented at Hartsville the Saturday before the primary, that being his only opportunity of defense. Mr Hodges declared that the; charges against him were false and malicious. He was describing how, ! at Hartsville two years ago, Ellerbe ! j had raised his right hand to heaven : j and hoped that God might strike him | dumb if he had had anything to do i with circulating these charges j against Hodges, when Congressman; Ellerbe arose and interrupted, say-j ing that at Hartsville he had admit- j ted having seen the letters defaming' Mr Hodges, but he disclaimed any any connection with the matter. Mr Hodges then presented three certiricates from persons who attend- j ed the Hartsville meeting, H Lide Law, G W Mcljeod and J W Good. } son, -.ach of whom declared that 'I heai 1 him deny emphatically any know', dge of a certain circular let- j ter that wa- being distributed against P A Hodges.' Mr Law added inj Is statement that Congressman El'.crbe had even denied being in Benr.ettsville at the time. Mr Hodges then presented to the' audience a signed statement from T i it gers.a 3iamx>ro politician anu a ther-in law of the late W II Ellerbe. It was R<>gvrs who issued the circular against Hodges two years ago and here is what he says in a recent statement: 'I wrote the card in the interest of .J E Kllerhe, whom I was then supporting for re-election. The same was su'.?mitte-i t-- Eilero** /* an t approved by him before it was given publicity. I have been since informed that K'ierbe stated that I wrote and issued -aid reply without his knowledge or approval. if he made such a statement, he lied. He n >t only knew of them.but he helped direct and mail the enve!o;>es inclosing them.' 0 P Townsend, a lawyer, apivnds the following: 'I know the above * i r r* r*i statement is correct. 1 anu j r. nailer be together directed the envelopes in which Mr Rogers' reply was mailed and Ellerbe carried them to the post-office. Ellerbe selected the list of persons to whom thev were sent.' To show that the charges made against him two years ago were false, Mr Hodges submitted the following affidavit from J A Drake, Clerk of Court; 'I do certify that there are no judgments in this office against P A Hodges and there were none against him in 1908 on record in this office.' Mr Hodges then concluded by saying that somebody had lied. Was it T I Rogers and Judge Townsend? Was it Lide Law and Goodson, or was it J E Ellerbe? If a man would be false to party principles, as Ellerbe had been in this lumber tariff proposition when he violated the very pledge he had signed, if a man should prove false to those who had befriended him, as Rogers had befriended Ellerbe, if a man should prove false in these things, was he fit to go to Congress: The last speaker was Ben B Sellers. He pitched into Ellerbe fore and aft and derided the Congressman's excuses that he had got money /rom the pork bairel for his district. Sellers claimed that Ellerbe had been quite cheap in his demands, after letting the others get so much. He denounced Ellerbe as a Republican. Ellerbe's Defence. The day following at Marion Mr Ellerbe spoke first and made the following reply to Mr Hodges' charges at Dillon as reported by Col WilWilliams Banks, the same reporter for the Columbia State who reported the Dillon meeting: J E Ellerbe was given a rousing' reception today. He declared that in this race he had intended saying nothing against his opponents unless forced to do so. But at Dillon legit imate debate had been abandoned and personalities were indulged in by an opponent. He then stated his side of the T I Rogers controversy. Two years ago he went to Bennettsville Friday before the primary and saw this circular letter in Hodges' office. Ellerbe disclaimed having had any knowledge of the letter until then. He told Mr Rogers at Hartsville that a copy of the letter had been mailed to Hodges by Rogeas. Ellerbe then declared that these three men at Hartsville who had made these statements as to what he had said were mistaken. He had told Mr Hodges to come to the hotel at Hartsville and get copies of the letter but Hodges never came.'* WHAT THE KIDNEYS DO.
