It was a n of bright ideas, deep thought Deere spirituality, the k'nd of rse that appeals to those who and who enjoy the meat of the gospeL, and crave something higher and deeper than the little "spiel" of the modern superficial preacher. Rev Mr Whitehead is principal of the Leeksville-Spray Institute at Leeksville-Spray, N C. W L Bass. Esq, was in Manning last Thursday on business before Judge Wilson. Last Thursday afternoon those who were near the depot witnessed a scene which graphically portrayed the immeasurable chasm l>etween the white man and the negro. In a yawr a white man of good educatioiy in easy circumstances, a first rate thinker, a retired preacher and a cwn who has made a success in Mf^and holds the profound respect of everybody?this man now seventy-seven years of age, was chopping weeds and hoeing grass industrious ly, while the sweat s:reamed down his wrinkled face. Not a hundred feet away a half dozen burly, sleek "niters" were loafing?doing absolutely nothing and would do nothing even for treble pay. Lazy, dirty, filthy louts that are cancers upon the breasts of society, raising nothing but "nigger" musk, while this splendid old hero is elevating mankind, for no man can live the life of this man and fail to better all mankind. Mr Eddie Cockfield, who has been away 12 years in Georgia, is out on a visit to relatives and old time friends. In appearance time has wrought but little change in him, but the changes in men and things noted by him are many and marked. While veral of the friends he left here have gone to :hat other land. Edwards brought in two prisoners Tuesday and delivered them to Sheriff Graham. They are both young negroes, about 25 years old, and are charged with the serious crime of assault with intent to ravish. Their names are Thurber Weaver and Ed. Turner, and their home is in the Vox section, where Constable Edwards says they have borne a fairly good reputation. The alleged assault took place on July 2, and the circumstances, as gathered from Mr. Edwards, are about as follows: A young negro woman living near Savage employed the two men to haul an organ from Lake City to her home. She accompanied them in the wagon and at dark near Vox postoffice, where she says they had driven the wagon instead of taking the nearest course to Savage, the alleged assault was committed. The defendants' statement is to tne effect that the young woman hired them to haul the organ for her and refused to pay for their services. They charge her with prosecuting them from motives of revenye or spite because they insisted on being paid. The preliminary hearing was held before Magistrate Davis on Monday and a probable case made out, hence the defendants were committed to jail as above stated. Why not patronize the City Pressing Club?
