RECORD'S GOOD ROADS PARTY Well Pleased with Reception Given Them at Klngstree. Kingstree.July 28:?No county of the sixteen so far visited bv The Record's Good Roads campaign party has responded more heartily to the call for good roads or displayed more genuine interest than Williamsburg county did at the gathering here to-day. In spite of the fact that farmers are almost desperately busy working their crops and that to-morrow the Dig guns or me ;?uue (juuucai campaign open fire here, the attendance was almost as gratifying as the commendable tpirit which characterizes those citizens of Williamsburg whom we have met. One of the pleasantest features of the meeting was the presence of a goodly number of young ladies who are attending the summer school in session here They occupied seats within the railing and Mr Winslow in opening his speech remarked that ^it was the first time he had ever faced a jury of women and the sen* -L- J- ? PI ument iriai me ua.) ?? a^iua^uing when women would be granted the rights they are claiming aroused them to much applause. The success of the effort to stimulate the subject of good roads was due largely to the earnest and effective efforts of Capt J A Kelley, the representative from this county on the executive committee of the ( Good Roads and Drainage league; Editor C W Wolfe, of The County Record, and Mr J J Graham, county road engineer, as the supervisor is called here. He is a live wire and the hot sands dcn't burn the bottom of his feet. Capt Kelley presided. Congressman Ellerbe, who is here to attend the political campaign meeting tomorrow, was present and was called upon for a speech. He responded with a forceful and ringing call upon the people to realize the necessity for good roads and stir themseKes into activity to secure them. Mr Ellerbe said, in the beginning, + f A nvnrnCC in tKfi inai (it; nanv^u vv/ uApivoo *?? vuv ? strongest possible terms his unqualified approval of The Record's camA paign and that the paper by this . work had placed the people of South Carolina under lasting obligations to * it. Several times he stirred his audience to cheers. He did not varv I* in one wora from the subject ofi r good roads. Mr Winslow being confronted by . f; ' a responsive audience was in fine' ji form. He deserved the intense in-; \ terest given him and the complimentary testimony to his ability and use-! fulness uttered by Mr Ellerbe. At the close of the meeting Capt fiveney as executive committeeman for Williamsburg urged an organization for good roads. A temporary organization was made by the election of Capt Kelley as president, Mr J F Cooper as vice-president and A C Hinds, Esq, as secretary and treasurer. They will confer and appoint i all necessary committees and pro-1 ceed to a general permanent county j organization. A resolution presented by Solicitor, '! Stoll was adopted which expressed the appreciation of the meeting of the work Wing done by The Record in the cause of good roads and their thanks for the presence of the party to-day.?Columbia Record. I News, Opinions and Political Views of Correspondent. I Andrews, August 1;?Your scribe j attended the State campaign meeting in Georgetown last Wednesday, Ju; ly27.and listened to the presentment ' by each candidate of his claims to the; office to which he aspired. It seems! I! that the great question, wnisKey, is about the greatest political issue still. Now,Mr Editor, right here I differ j with the most of our people. I don't think that whiskey and its evils should ever be made a political ; issue. This is a moral question and should be settled outside of politics. , j Quite a crowd of hands.under the ! supervision of Mr Ford, civil eiy gineer, has been doing some muc , needed grading and ditching in this part of town the past week. I Mr E W Hendisee, formerly of this town but now of Marion, is spending a few days with friends and relatives in town. A lively crowd of young people took a trip Sunday over to Black Mingo in automobiles and report having a pleasant time. Quite a lot of people from here attended the speaking of the State candidates at the county seat last Friday and all who heard the candidates for Governor are loud in their praise of Hon T G McLeod as Governor. The writer did not attend, bring sick. It is just as essential that the voters should know the issues of. ' candidates for the Legislature as to ' know those of Road Engineers. ! Now, in short, these are the writer's. A'l public improvement must and can only come from taxation. Now. at present, our people who do pay taxes are carrying all the tax bur' den they can, but enact a law to catch the tax dodger; get all prop| erty on the tax books and make all securities taxable and there will be 'just double the revenue raised and no one hurt. This must be done and done now to redeem our State and county; then when this tax law has been adjusted, watch the improvement. We are collecting taxes from a a;ui uiiu-iuui in v/i tuv vuauviv property of the State. The writer has been a member of the county equalizing board for 10 or 12 veais and is now thoroughly convinced as to the condition of taxation. The law can be changed. Make a law when those linen collar fellows swear to false statements in listing their property, let the courts of our county put stripes on those tax dodgers. You will in a few years see the taxable valuation just three times what it is now. Brother tax-payer, I am with you; my motto is to fight the tax dodger. Subscriber. Announcement.
