J^ STUDY THE ' CHECK ACCOUNT IDEA DELIBERATELY Study it from the "flaw-seeing" side. Think of everything you can which makes to iuuk advantage to keep money in your pocket or around the housesee if you can find even ONE good reason. Safety, convenience, credit, receipts for all bills paid and MANY other sound reasons favor the check account side. Come in and talk it over with us. Bank of Williamsburg, Kingstree, S. C. ( W. Stoll, E. C. Epps, Pres't. Cashier. C. W. Boswell, Asst. Cashier. ? ^ "TOw /a IMPERSONAL, p Mr H Foxworth was here Tuesday from Cades. Mr and Mrs T M Kellahan of Benson were in town Saturday shopping. Miss Helen Scott is visiting her aunt's, Mrs Mag Alford's, family at Maxton, N C. Dr Robert Wilson of Charleston filled his regular appointment at the Episcopal chapel Sunday morning. Mr Bishop Burgess left last Saturday for Asheville, N C, to spend some weeks in the "Land of the Sky". Mr Geo A McElveen attended the Retail Hardware Dealers' association's annual meeting in Charleston Tuesday. Mr B L Nesmith, a wide-awake young business man of Nesmith postoffice, gave us the pleasure of a call Monday. Road Engineer Graham went to Charleston Tuesday to attend the Good Roads Rally held under the auspices of the Charleston Automobile club. Our genial friend, Mr E F Prosser of Vox, called to see us Monday. Brother Prosser looks well and seems to be in good training for the strenuous campaigning just a few weeks ahead. Major EL* Fishburne, of the Third Regiment, S C V, left Sundaynight to join his command en route to Camp Chickamauga.Ga,where the State militia will be encamped for about nine days. Mr L H Fairey, now of Branchville, formerly cashier of the Bank of Kingstree, visited relatives here Sunday and Monday. Mr Fairey has oodles of friends here, all of whom were delighted to welcome him back. Mr R S Tisdale of Zeb was here Saturday afternoon to meet his daughter, Mrs Mag Guerry, and two children, who came up from St Stephens -to return with him to Mrs Guerry's old home. We were glad to have a chat with "Johnson" at the station while he awaited the. arrival of the train. Our big-hearted friend acquired the "happy habit" in early youth and has never suffered a relapse. Henry E Davis, Esq, of the Florence bar, was here Saturday on professional business. Mr Davis is a Williamsburg boy of whom the old county has a right to feel proud. Admitted to the bar only a few years ago he has "made good" in a field where lawyers are rife and competition is keen. His friends bespeak for him a distinguished career in the profession he has chosen as his life-work. j Our Em |[QCAL"yiTEMS.| Several land sales are advertised this week. The Bank of Greelyville and the People's Bank of Scranton publish their quarterly statements this week Both these institutions show ; healthy financial condition and have good, substantial backing. Mr W S Camlin.Jr.sent us a post card view of his prize acre in the boys' corn club contest. From the camera's evidence the fellow whc tops Willie for the tool chest,or some other valuable prize, will have tc hustle. We return sincere thanks to oui friend, Mr R F Ward, for a lot ol nice apples grown on his place near Beulah. Mr Ward has demonstrated the fact that Williamsburg soil will produce just as fine apples as can be grown anywhere. "Verily (in the language of our bright and versatile Lake City correspondent) the possibilities of our soil and climate are illimitable." The Kingstree Hardware Co, with characteristic public spirit and liberality, has presented the boys' com club with a prize worthhaving?a tool chest of polished oak, containing 36 tools, besides little extras, such ai glue, tacks, nails, sand-paper, etc, toe numerous to mention. This handsome prize is on display in the Hardware Company's window and every - - - ? * 1 i i . _ i _i. boy in the contest snouia taxe a u?o* at it and add a little more "top dressing" to his acre. The tools are all the celebrated "diamond edge" make and fully warranted. At the Good Roads Rally held in Charleston July 12 under the auspices of the Charleston Automobile club, one man was chosen from each county in the State as member of s Central State committee to organize in every county a good roads league, whose object will be, generall> speaking, the improvement of the high-ways. Capt J A Kelley was elected member of the central committee from Williamsburg county. The county good roads league will be organized on July 28, after the good roads rally to be held as announced elsewhere in this issue. To our friend, Mr A W Chandler, of the Gourdins section, we are grateful for a bag of nice peaches. Mr Chandler says that the tree frorr which these peaches were gathered produced two distinct crops this year, the fruit of second crop?oi which specimens weie also submitted?being about the size of a green hickory-nut and almost as hard, while that of the first crop is of good size and excellent flavor. Whether the phenomenon of the two crops is due to the comet or to the freakish weather we are having ; this year is an open question. A New Code of Ethics. California John is a great friend^ i of Stewart Edward White's and a very romantic figure, of whom the author writes in the July American Magazine. The code of ethics of Cal! ifornia John as Mr White describes ' | them are without parallel for ingenu, I ity and uniqueness. It is as follows: , I "'Back in the fifties,' said Cali! fornia John, 'I made up an account [ between me and the Lord. Whent ever I did anything I ought not to, 11 charged myself up with a good I. stiff fine, and costs, anywhere frcm , I two bits to five dollars, dependin' on how deep I'd got in. Gamblin' s was two bits a chip; drinks dos ' reales per, and so on. It wasn't ' only what you'd call police court cases, either. I rung in fightin', 1 and meanness, and lying, and all ' sorts of cussedness. It was surprisI ing what it came to by the end of ; the vear. I wish I remembered ex ? actly, but it was surprising.' " ' " 'What did you do with the money?' I asked him. " 'That's the point. I used to figure out on the other side where the Lord hadn't treated me square. I figured out He ought to send the rain, and dry calving weather, and should hold his hand in regard to I fire and flood. I charged Him with " them things?the actual damages, ; you $abe.' California John threw t back his head and laughed with i whole-hearted Enjoyment. 'In a year . I had the Lord so far behind the r game that I could have drunk my' self to death at two bits fine a drink . J and then been certain sure of salva, tion by some few round dollars. So 1 j I give it up, and come to the conclu1 j sion that a man was supposed to be decent in spite of tribulation.' " 'What did you find the best . practical scheme finally?' I asked as ! he rose to go. { " 'Oh,just live along,' replied CalI ifornia John. i; A Frightful Wreck .! of train, automobile or buggy may 11 cause cuts, bruises, abrasions, sprains or wounds that demand Buclden's ;! The rapidly approaching season will tl unquestionably be the best in the his tory of Wrightsville and Carolina Beaches, the delightful summer resorts ; In close proximity to Wilmington. 0 | Practically every organization of im ; portance will meet at limington ana " j Wrightsville between June 1st, and I _ ' September 1st, among which are 1 the United Commercial Travelers of the Carollnas, the North CaroI lina Press Association, North Car: olina Good Roads Association; State Medical Society, State Den, tal Society, the Bar Association, the Bankers' Association, State CounI cil, Jr. O. U. A. M., the North CaroI lina Architects, find probably others. Nearly, if not quite all, the associai tlona will take a side trip down the ! Cape Fear river with probably a stop at Carolina Beach, as no trip to Wilmington is complete without a trip on the steamer Wilmington. One of the most important of the many improvement at Wrlghtsville Qj Beach is the enlargement of Tarry- ' P moore Hotel, Mr. W. J. Moore, i w manager, the excellent hotel liav- P ing added another wing to the al , north of the old part, in which ai j are 60 well appointed rooms and ^ 1 equipped with all the convenences w J of a modern hostelry. The addi- *| I tion extends out toward the ocean , . and is so arranged that every room y1 I commands a view of the ocean. The *L' extension is built on concrete piers, ? and is connected with the old part tl of the hotel by spacious verandas, li Of equ.il, if not greater importance is the extensive improvements at the i Seashore Hotel, Mr. Edgar L. Hlnton, T | manager. A steel pier has been con- | i structed from the rear entrance of j . the hotel to extend 700 feet out into j the ocean. The Pier is 30 feet wide j \\ ! the greater part of its length and i . 1 out at the end is 50 feet wide. At j , : the end of the pier will b? erected | a two-story building to be used for A ' concerts, dances and other forms of i amusement. The roof of the build* ** ; ing will be used as observation vel randa, from which a fine view of the beach can be had. The pier is really a continuation of the h< - Mida. The ! pier will be greatly t ,i by fish- SI ing parties as well as . 1..0 different , forms of amusement mentioned above. a ! Besides the pier, the Seashore has ^ , enlarged its capacity by the addition of 80 rooms, in a wing extending to the north of the other part along ; the ocean front. With this addition ; the Seashore Hotel now has 250 well , equipped rooms Lumina, North Carolina's pleasure ' palace, has also been improved, or rather the approach to the amusement resort has been greatly irai oroved and beautified by the removal of all small buildings, leaving Lumina standing conspicuously out in an open, clear space. Additions have been built to nearly all of the many high-class boarding five to twenty room.', each, i Down at Carolina Beach, where so many Wllmingtonians and out-ofI town visitors like to sojourn, a num; ber of improvements have been made and visitors this season will find the resort even more attractive than ever and a trip on the steamer Wilmington is one that should not be miss . ed. Some stop at the beach and 1 others will go on to South port, from 1 whence they will take the delightful trip out to sea. Everything points to probably one of the^hpRt sposnn* In th? hlatorv nf the resorts around Wilmington and many ^ I new faces, as well as familiar ones, will be seen here during the summer. The. Atlantic Coast Line is ottering an attractive line of excursion rates : rates from several hundred points in ' the Carolinas to Wilmington an<?
