NOW I I Qve igj Remember \* 1 will convince y I Remember: Vs j l NEWS OF THE DAY AT ANDREWS. PICNICKERS DRENCHED ? RUNAWAY ACCIDENT-DEATH OF MR R A IVEY?PERSONAL. Andrews, June 27:?Harpers Masonic Lodge, No 22o, gave their annual picnic last Friday, the 24th, that l>eing St John's day. To the utter surprise of your scribe and nearly every one else the picnic was held in Black river swamp, and just al>out one o'clock the entire crowd was caught in one of the heaviest rains that has fallen here for years. The way this crowd of pleasureseekers was drenche 1 was a caution. Next year, brother Masons, give your picnic in town. I did not go and can laugh at the others. 1 understand, however, the occasion was greatly enjoyed until the rain came. One day last week one of the Harpers Transfer Go's horses, while standing alone in harness at the) ^ East-End, l>ecame frightened and ran away. The excited animal ran I near by one of! the teams of the ?? ? rv ^ ^ nwiiiaijt .ULIv.'aiiiut v", ??. standing hooked to a dray, which also l>ecame frightened and ran, following in close pursuit of the first horse and huggy. The two frightened teams collided with a horse and buggy driven by a man and almost demolished his vehicle, but no one was seriously hurt. The two horses ran from East-End clear across the town, nearly two miles. The remains of Mr R A Ivey of Belfast, Ga., were received here last Friday morning. I understand that Mr Ivey lost his life by being struck I by a falling tree in the log woods. T ie body was met here by relatives and friends and laid to rest at the Black river hurying ground, near Potato ferry, where Mr Ivey was raised. The deceased is a son of Mr> H Ivey and a nephew of Hon R H j Kellahan of Kingstree. Mr Ivey had been in a logging business near Belfast, Ga., for several years. His friends and relatives were shocked to hear of his untimely demise. Rev S T Russell,of the Bloomingvale section, was in town Saturday to meet bis wife, who had been visiting relatives at St Stephens. People here are always glad to meet Mr Russell and listen to his merry jokes. Mr I) W A want, of this place, was quite ill for several days last week,! hut we are glad to see him very much improved. Sheriff 0 \V Scurry of Georgetown and Treasurer Hemingway were on our streets a few hours one day last week shaking hands with the voters of their county*. The cotton bloom sent you by the writer was from a 12-acre field which will nearly average waist high. This is the Excelsior Improved cotton, which Clemson College claims to l>e the best improved cotton in the State. I bought the seed by their advice. They also recommended the use of the Marlloro Prolific corn. Improved seed, thorough cultivation, liberal use of fertilizer and diversification of crops is the true se / cret of farming. Subscriber. To the Hon R W Memminger, Presiding Judge in the Third Judicial circuit: The grand jury of the county of Williamsburg begs leave to submit to your honor the following general presentment: We have examined all the county offices with the exception of the Sheriff's and the Judge of Probate's and find all the records well kept in a neat and business-like manner. As to the offices of Sheriff and Judge of Probate we have deferred our ex-! amination until the fall term of this court. Since the spring term of court | our committee appointed for the | purpose has visited and inspected the county chaingang. We report that we find the prisoners well cared for and safely guarded, the mules and other property all in good shape and well cared for and the work done by the gang of great benefit to the highways of the county. We have passed upon all bills submitted to us by the Solicitor and duly returned same to the Court. In our inspection of the office of the Clerk of Court, we have found several of the old volumes of records badly worn and in danger of falling to pieces. We recommend that the Clerk of Court be authorized to have all such volumes as in his judgment require it, to be rebound at the expense of the county. We recommend that for the inforl mation of the people of the county, the Clerk of Court do publish in The County Record between the first and fifteenth days of October the names of all persons who have taken out during that year licenses to traffic in seed cotton and the place where such traffic is to be carried on. We beg to return our thanks to your honor for the plain and lucid instructions given us and to the various officers of the court for courtesies shown us in the discharge of our duties. L L Caldwell, Foreman. Kingstree, S C, June 21, 1910. A Town Without a Newspaper. Out in Butte, Montana, two or three years ago, the city suddenly found itself without a newspaper. They attempted to get along without one. For five weeks the town was without a newspaper. In that time, the business, social, industrial, aIJrrl/-\n r? n?,-J 11 ao f Ii^a f U a icugiuua aiiu cuuuiuuiiaj 111c ui uit city not only came to a standstill but conditions actually stagnated, figuratively speaking.
