MAKES REPLY!
TO AEFTDAVTTS IN ARTICLE
SIGNED "SCRANTON** AND DE-, <
NOUNCFS WRITER THEREOF.
Editor County Record:?
To so much of Dr W S Lynch's letter,
to Governor Anoel, published in the i
News and Courier of the 10th inst, and J
of the article which appeared in The
County Record of last week over the
signature, "Scranton "?to so much of j

this letter ana arm-ie as aiu?.A? ?.v,
ekner directly or indirectly, I wish to
have a word of reply.
I was one of those who canvassed,
with the Lake City petition, the territory
east of the Coast Line and north
of the lake, this being the eastern part
k ? of the territory covered by the Scranton
petition. Messrs Henry Collins and
iW McCutchen and I canvassed the
efitire area included in the first petition,
Mr Collins covering the territory west
^of the railroad, while Mr McCutchen
and I in company covered that part east
of the railroad. Therefore any charge
made against the canvassers of this
territory necessarily refers to one or
more of us three, and besides,in the article
above mentioned, I am attacked by
name. So far as Messrs Collins and
McCutchen are concerned, they can
speak for themselves.
^ In his letter to Governor Ansel Dr
.^l.jnch uses this language: "They,

and included the Lake City terri-)
tory and said to the people that the two
towns. Lake City and Scranton, wished j
to come under one petition and be an- j
I nexed to Florence county . . . ."j
If he means to charge me with this
, statement, I pronounce his* charge absolutely
false. He uses the word canvassers,
and therefore perforce intends
the charge for one or more of the
three.
In the article appearing in The Rec-,
ord the charge is made and in similar ,
v language. Here it is: "Several have!
said that the canvassers stated to them
as an inducement to get them to sign
the second petition that Scranton and
Lake City had come to some underI
standing and wished to be annexed to
I' Florence county under one petition and
t that every voter in int; entire tcmivij .
B had signed the petition without hesitation."
A nyone who makes this charge of
me, if any such there be, tells an unK
varnished lie, whether he be the writer
B of that article or one or more of the !
B Again this anonymous writer says:!

a number that absolutely refused to
sign, regardless of all the inducements
and misleading arguments."
No misleading arguments were made
by me nor in my presence, nor have I
heard it even rumored that any of the
canvassers made misleading arguments.
If the author mean6 to lay the charge
at my door that I attempted to mislead j
anyone, I tell him he is telling what he i
knows is not true. So far as the declar- i
ation that "quite a number that absolutely
refused to sign" is concerned, I
have this to say, that, out of the whole
number, 122, which I baw, only five declined
to sign.
With reeard to the "affidavits" sub-!;
mitted along with the said article I
have a few remarks to make. Some of (
the allegations made with reference to
me contained just enough truth to ]
make the worst kind of lies. As these ,
allegations stand in the affidavits, they
are absolutely false, and if these men ,
severally swore to just what appears ' (
over their signatures, they are perjured ,
liars and wholly unworthy the name of! (
men. I have seen these men and asktd'
them about these affidavits, and in each ,
case they make grave charges against Dr ]
Lynch. With these charges, whether ,
true or untrue, I have nothing to do;
that is a matter to be settled by them
and the man who they say wrote the
affidavit and whose name appears subscribed
thereto as notary public.
C R Benton tells me that the statements
made by him to Dr Lynch are
not correctly given in the paper purporting
to be his affidavit. He says j
' > j --A 1 *1? I
further tnai ne am noi re?u me |
which he signed and that the writer of |
that paper changed his statements. He 1
says that he told Dr Lynch that I said {
that every voter I had seen signed the j
petition except George James, and J
"everybody knows what kind of fellow
he is." This is just what I did say to
Benton, but see how different this appears
when printed. Either Dr Lynch
has basely twisted Benton's language
or Benton lied when he made the statement
to Dr Lynch. Whichever one is
guilty, he is the man whojn I denounce.
With regard to the school district matter,
the affidavit is correct as to the
fact that the Scranton petition divides
a school district and that statement is
in no wise misleading. The fact is that
that petition actually divides two school
districts, while the Lake City petition
takes in both in their entirety.
C G Shaffer says to me that he did
not tell Dr Lynch that "P D Cockfield
stated to me as an inducement to get
my signature that if the first petition
ers had known that Lake City wished
to be annexed they would have included
them in said petition, and furthermore
stated that the line would be exactly
the same as first with the addition of
Lake City township." He says that
he did not knew that such a statement

was in the paper he signed; and goes
on to say that he told Dr Lynch that I
said that the line begins at the same
point and went to some bridges on the
lake but he did not know what bridges.
If the paper published as Shaffer's affidavit
is in reality actually what he says,
then he is an unmitigated liar of the
front rank. As to his charge that Dr
Lynch changed his statement, he and
Dr Lynch for that
J Ralston Casselman said to me yesterday
that he din not tell Dr Lynch
that I said that "the towns of Lake
and Scranton had agreed on the matter
and wished to come under one petitfon,
and that every voter was signing the
petition in the entire territory." On
other hand, he sayfthat he told Dr Lynch
that he understood that the two towns
had agreed, but did not tell him that I
said so. and that he further told Dr
Lynch that I said that everybody I had
seen signed the petition except George
James. Mr Casselman further says
that he did not give Dr Lynch any affidavit
at all, that he made no oath, signed
no paper, did not authorize Dr Lynch to
sign his name to any paper, cannot sign
his name and did not touch a pen or a
pencil to paper. If this be true, Dr
Lynch should at once be removed from
from office as a notary public. I call
attention to the subjoined affidavit of J
H V Gaskins as to this matter, he having
been present when I talked with
Casselman on yesterday. If Casselman
really made the affidavit which appears
as his, he is a liar of the basest type.
I apologize to-the sensitive readers
who object to the harshness of the language
which I have used, should it appear
harsh I mean no offense or disrespect
to these, but I do not deal in
soft language but speak just what I
think and wherever in the aoove article
this strong language occurs, it is intended
to mean just what it says. 1
feel so justly outraged at the base calumnies
to which I have referred, that I
cannot but speak my real feelings. This
article gives me pain rather than pleasnre,
but duty to myself and my honor
demand that I state the facts as theji
actually exist.
