OVER ANNEXATION PETITIONS-SCRANTON
WANTS TO VOTE ON
QUESTION SEPARATELY.
Editor County Record:Kindly
permit me to call the at-y
tention of the citizens living within
the territory that was first proposed
to bo annexed to Florence county to
a matter of great Importance, and I
trust every voter living within the
proposed territory will consider the
^matter referred to carefully and
4^ well. The promoters or originators of
annexing a portion of Williamsburg
to Florence county are at Scranton
and vicinitv, and the citizens of this
territory decided on a certain line
known as Lynch's lake without first
going to the "Supreme Authority"
at Lake City, which line would be a
natural boundary between Williamsburg
and Florence counties and,
moreover, would serve as a line between
Lake City and Scranton,which
we, as well as the best thinking people
of Florence county, deem of the
utmost importance.
The writer is reliably informed
that the petitions were prepared by
the Scranton voters and unanimously
signed bv the citizens o* vne proposed
territory and presented to the
Governor of the State asking for an
election for the proposed territory
to be annexed to Florence county.
This petition was subsequently passed
to the Attorney General for his consideration
and he reported that it
was in proper form and had met all
the constitutional requirements
Just about this stage of the game,
the people of Lake City, headed by
the King of Williamsburg county
and closely and surely followed by
his many disciples, with all their dignity,
power and authority, directed
a delegation from the Metropolis,the j
town that wants a court house at
their door (and the tax-payers to
meet the expense) over to Scranton,
asking to come in and be embraced
by the Scranton petition, which n*quest
was absolutely refused. This
request or appeal was made a
second and third time, and finally
the} people of Scranton were informed
of the fact by the ever welcome
Lake City delegation that they would
not consider our wishes in the matbut
would at once "get out new
petitions covering our territory
again and also their territory which
they wished annexe ! to Florence;
? ? J M-V/MfA* tl'/Mll/l f V?Q CI T _
#HU IUVICVVCI nuuiu jutu cut \JW?ernor
to hold over the first petition
t'll theirs could be prepared and presented
for his consideration." This,
we think, is net just and should not
appeal to any citizen. We are now
informed that they immediately
started oht with their petitions, as
| previously stated, from Lake City, j
covering the ?cranton territory, also
the portion which Lake City wished
to be annexed to Florence county, j
and evidently having an argument
for different individuals as the case
demanded.
Several have said that the canvassers
stated to them as an inducement
to get them to sign the second
petition that Scranton and Lake City
had come to some understanding and
wished to be annexed to Florence
county under one petition, and that
every voter in the entire territory
had signed the petition without hesitation.
The writer happens to know
of quite a number that absolutely
refused to sign, regardless of all the
onr) miclfflpincr flrcril
II1U UVCIUVUUI c*4*v* ? ?
ments. 'Tis true they caused several
to sign that would not otherwise
have done so, by their various statements;
we have hear.t of several
who said that if they knew Lake
City would be taken in they would
ask that their names be erased from
the first petition. I have made some
inquirv and as yet have not found a
man Jfhat knows anything of the
I agreement between the two towns,
i and so far as its being our desire to
come in under one petition, this
statement appears to us as misleadi
ing Mid has caused many voters to
sign we second petition that would
! not otherwise have done so. We all
agree with our Johnsonville friend
in saying, "Lake City is no longer
boasting, but now begging her way
into Florence ccunty," and besides
; y
we he ir it frequently stated by j
some of the most prominent citizens'
of Florence county that they do not ?
care to take any more of Williams-!
burg than to the lake, which is to be
the line between the counties. 1 am 1
quite sure that not a voter or any '
one else in the lirst proposed territory
h id the remotest objection to 1
the d ear pe< pie of the Lake City, *
territory being annexed to Florence c
county, but as self-thinking people 1
they do seriousl . object to being die- 1
tated and "bully-ragged" by any a
: communitythat has made an absolute ^
failure at everything they have ever *
; attempted to do pertaining to creat-; *
ing new or making changes in old ?
counties. Ask the proponents of the ^
j Lake City petition why they wished *
to join Florence county. As yet I
have not heard one of them answer a
that simple question, but have on 1
several occasions heard it reported , v
that should Lake City be annexed to , I
; Florence county in a short while she a
would then attempt to form her new a
county, which would mean more ex- p
pense and consequently higher tax- s
ation. Why, she has already deter- s
mined on the* line, having decided h
that they will run as far as Lynch's t
river, over in Florence county, for t
territory. Apparently they have a r
way of doing things to suit them- s
selves regardless of others' wishes in J d
the matter and especially so when it j c
comes to the formation of new | v
c mnties. We regret very much be- 5
ing forced to give our views on this' a
matter but want the jieople to know o
the true facts in the case and feel!
confident that they all can see that "
we, the ones that organized the t:
movement, are not getting afair:0
and impartial deal. Scranton. j r

Follow this advice.
Quaker Oats is the best of all foods;
it is also the cheapest. When such
men as Prof. Fisher of Yale University
and Sir James Crichton Browne,
LL.D.-F.R.S. of London spend the
best parts of their lives in studying
the great question of the nourishing
and strengthening qualities of different
foods, it is certain that their advice is
absolutely safe to follow.
