Many of the branches resem ble nothing else so much as hug , bunphes of grapes, the plums form ing such dense masses that the; bow the limbs like pendants. Mr and Mrs A M Jordan were ii Charleston Monday last. The Rosenfield Furniture Co o Florence has secured the McElveei building, lately occupied by Messr R^JF Taylor & Co, and is now oper ing up a stock of furniture an stoves. The rain Sunday night seemed t have been general throughout thi entire section. In quantity of wate spilled it ranks among the goo rfuns and in the display of electrici ty it was phenomenal. Mr J G Lii rage of Salters says he never sa\ anything to equal it, and it is ver doubtful if any one else ever wil nessed such a display. Hour afte hour one flash succeeded another a one beat of the pendulum follow another; and the grand and awfi illumination of the heavens formed picture with which there is nothinj to compare. Words can convey bu little idea of it. Seen, however, i will hardly be forgotten. A lot of land in Lake City wa sold last Tuesday morning at th rate .of very learlv fifteen thousan dollars an acre. Further, this lc has no improvements on it, is nc within fifty feet of any street, roa or other public place, and its owne could make practically no use of ii This may sound like a fairy tale, bu it is nothing of the kind. Mr A H Williams, Jr, is at home from the State University. s W< understand that Superintendent Seawell has been re-elected for the next year, and that the following teachers have also been re-elect^ ed,to wit: Misses Amber Wilks, Bertha Morris and Melville Gibson. e Some days ago an article appear0 ed in the daily papers giving the 1 names of towns in the State which B own fire equipment worth one thou sand dollars or more. The name of B Lake City did not appear in the list. ' We do not know the cause of the ir ? ...l ' | UIIKSMUU, I1U1 Ujjun wuum wj iay mc -blam*. However, the blame lies i somewhere, for this town should have been mentioned and not at the f bottom, either. We have a new fire n engine which alone cost more than >s one thousand dollars spot cash. Besides this we have hooks, ladders, a d new engine house, fire bell, fire wells and concrete tanks. And our equipo ment has been proven more than g once and on each occasion demonstrated its efficiency. In proportion ^ to size no town in this country is better fixed for fighting fire. It . may be that the modest town counv cil failed to make the report asked ed for. or the fault may belong to some one elsewhere. Until last ytar Lake City did not receive credit for g her true position as a tobacco market. In the "Year Book" issued by the department of industries and aga riculture, this town was barely mentioned as a tobacco center. When the truth was forced out, it was seen that this market is exceeded by only one in pounds and by none in the amount of money paid out. The j writer has not seen the last issue of e the "Year Book" and hence does ^ not know whether the commissioner has at last gotten awake to the * truth. This is mentioned to illus^ trate the consideration that some are r unwilling to accord us. In the mat' ter of fire equipment statistics there 1 may have been some more suppression of facts. The following letter has been handed us with the request that we publish same: I "Yours is among the fqw counties | that have not yet applied for a Fartmers' Institute to be held tome time this summer. I am sure that the farmers of your county would like to have one but, on the principle of what is everybody's business is not attended to, no one has applied. As it will be necessary for me to know all the points at which institutes are to be held before I can arrange a a date for any, I am writing to ask if you will be good enough to take up the matter with some of the progressive farmers of your county and learn from them if such is desired. If wanted, I can hold two institutes in your county. If possible, it is preferred to hold ^hese in the rural districts and not in the county seat or the towns. If two are held I it will be well to distribute them I well over the county. I Trusting to hear from you at an early date, I remain, Yours ^ry truly, D N Barrow > Superintendent Clemson College, S C, June 3." The New Methodist Church. Through the courtesy of the building committee we have seen the plans of the new Methodist church. The contract is now being advertised to let and the building when completed and equipped with modern furniture will cost $15,000 or $16,000. Judging from the sketches we have seen of the proposed building the new church when completed will be a magnificent structure, massive in design and ornate in architectural beauty. It is expected that work will be begun on the building within the next 60 days, the subscriptions already pledged being enough to warrant the building committee in going ahead with their plans, j When the Methodists dedicate their new house of worship it will not be long before the other denominations will erect new church buildings and our town will no longer bear the reproach of indifference in providing churches commensurate with the material prosperity visible on every hand. The influence of advertising has penetrated into every stratum of life. It is hardly conceivable that th^ there is a home in the United States where people read the English 1 language that has not been affected by advertising in some manner or other. The effect upon the public mind is educational and elevating and does much for the education of classes who cannot afford books. In reading advertisements one reads some of the best worded phrases and most forceful arguments that can be found. The direct influence advertisements bring upon the reading public is good or bad according to the ad. The truth is the most essential requisite and has its effects accordingly.? The American Presc.
