NEWS NOTES FROM ANDREWS.
Auto Turns Turtle?The Bflly Goat
As a Crime Deterrent.
Andrews,May 30-?Mr G W Camlin's
automobile became uncontrollable
in Georgetown last Saturday
and "turned turtle" with Messrs D
^ W Avant, John Everett and G W
Camlin in the machine. No one was
seriously hurt, though the occupants
were pretty badly shaken up and
excited. The brand new machine was
nearly demolished.
J Mr J J M orris of Lake City spent
a few hours in town last Thursday
while en route to the district conference
at McClellanville.
Mr G W Moore, the efficient c!e k
for the Blakeley-McCullough Co,was
visiting in town last Sunday.
Refreshing rains came generally
through this community last Tuesday
and Wednesday and every one
is thankful for this blessing of divine
Providence. Crops look much
improved since the rain.
Mr Editor, you have always heard
of the Masons and the Pythians
keeping a "billy goat" on hand for 1
the candidates to ride, but it is a
fact that we have a couple of fine
"billies" in our guard house for the
entertainment of inmates of the
"refrigerator." Mr W S Camlin
having the largest bunch, the town
council secured them from him. The
police of the town have the care of

these animals, wnicn are me unci
factors in a new scheme for stopping
law-breakers from violating the
laws. All other towns are watching
this scheme. In next week's paper I
will give the full details of this plan
?the effect of the goat in reducing
crime will be the subject.
Mr George W Powell, who some
weeks ago had his leg badly fractured
by falling from the top of a
building, was able to be on the
streets a few days ago, though he is
still suffering from his injuries and
it is feared that he will eventually
lose his limb.
Hon John S Graham was in town
a few hours last Thursday exchangife
greetings with his many friends.

An Appeal from a Drinker.
The following pathetic and tragic
letter is published in the June
American Magazine:
"About seven years ago I had a
wife and one child and held a Civil
Service position which would have
insured me a good salary the rest of
my days if I had not gone to drinking.
I lost my position on account
of drink, was suspended from my
lodge for misconduct while intoxi*

cated, and nnany got to wnere i
could not even get work as a common
laborer. I tried to reform, but
found it impossible if I stayed in
my home town; I tried to persuade
my wife to move somewhere else or
to let me go and then to come to
me after I had become established
somewhere else.- She refused to
leave or to let me do so, and finally
I ran away from them in order to
get away from the drink.
"I have been spending the past
three years in the extreme 'backwoods'
section of this State (Florida)
guarding prisoners on turpentine
farms, and absolutely away from
all liquor?yet when I had occasion
to make a short trip to one of our
larger cities a few weeks ago it was
one tremendous and continual struggle
to keep out of the barrooms, and
I hope never to be obliged to spend
another twenty-four hours in a 'wet'
town.
"This is the situation after a three
years' trial at overcoming thejiiquor
habit: My wife secured a divorce
as soon after I left home as possible,
and at thirty-five years of age I am
obliged to stay away out in the
woods, cut off from everything I
consider makes life worth living,
following an uncongenial occupation
and afraid to go among the people
I was used to for fear of again falling.

make this country safe for those of
us who have fallen, it will certainly

Clem son 'Agricultural College
Examinations.
The examinations for the award of
scholarships in Clemson Agricultural j
College will be held in the county j
court house on Friday, July 8, at
9 am. Applicants must fill out proper
forms, to be secured from the
county superintendent of education,
before they will be allowed to stand
the examination. For detailed information

of Education or to the President
of Clemson College.
Applicants for admission to the
college, but not seeking for the
scholarships, will also stand entrance
examinations at the court house
Friday, July 8.
The scholarships are worth $100
