A VARIETY OF NEWS j
FROM LAKE CITY.;
GRADED SCHOOL COMMENCE- j
MENT--BUILDING ACTIVITY
CONTINUES.
' Lake City, May 16:?Dr A H
Williams was in Charleston a part
^ of this week.
?
The Lake City schools closed last j
Tiio ovormsps pnded Tues- i
wcca. i iiv vav* ~???
> day night, having begun on Sun-'
day. The sermon was preached j
by Dr V C Baldy, president of
Coker College, Hartsville. Such a j
discourse was a genuine treat to
all who had the pleasure of hear-1,
ing it. An entertainment consist- j
ing of recitations, music and plays j
took place Monday night. On Tues- ;
day night Professor John G Clink- ?
1 scales, of Wofford College, delivered ,
the literary address, and it was a <
splendid address indeed. Rare are ;
the occasions upon which our people j
hear an address that elicits such j
general and favorable comment as! i
this one.
The session has been a satisfactory
and successful one. The ,
teachers as a whole made a good
faculty, and the causes for complaint
were few. In the discipline
told the general morale the student
body is good. j
Col 0 T Hall is getting ready to j
build a tobacco dry house on
Acline avenue, just north of hi3 |
sales ware-hou3e. The structure
will be of brick and will be sixty ,
feet wide and a hundred and fifty f
i'eet long and two stories in height. (
It will be furnished with the ^
latest model drying machines and ; ]
appurtenances and in every detail i
will be a complete drying plant. ' i
/ 1
iieveral car loads of brick are on
the ground and work will be be- | ^
gun right away, so that the plant j
r.ill be ready for the approaching
reason. This enterprise, which will
represent an investment of something
like ten thousand dollars,
means much for the tobacco mar-1 ]
ket of this town and much for the ' <
tobacco growing industry of the';
country. '
Halley's comet seems to be play- :
ing the mischief among the young <
folks. There is a regular courting j 1
pnidemic in this town, and the dis- i
"J
ease is assuming alarming pro- <
portions. It has broken out even <
among some of the knee-breeches 1
boys and it turns these youngsters i
to maids of twice their ages. The <
"sooner" girls seem to have es- 'i
caped the malady so far, but all 1
the other unmarried folk have the <
disease bad except one or two old <
bachelors, who appear to have been (1
inoculated with "anti" virus. .
The tenth grade of the high ;
school had a picnic at Courtney 1
Point, Lynch's river, last Wednes- ,
day.
The Singletary brick block on
Main street has been completed.
Messrs Reddick & Le vis have taken

ing up a stock of goods. The
next room is occupied by The
People's Drug Co., and the third
room is now the location of Mr i
L H Howie's market. ; J
Mrs Emmie L Bass has returned
!
to Florence, after a stay of a few
days in town. i
Mrs L G Atkinson is* at home
from a visit in Wadesboro, N. C. '

fiat is, an evening expre; s Here
tofore all express went north on
train No 80, which leaves here at
about 8 o'clock in the morning and
reaches Richmond at eight that ni^h:
and points farther north later the
same night. Stuff sent by that
train had to be gathered the day
before it was shipped and did not
go on the market until the morning
after it left here, which was
the third day after being gathered.
Under the new arrangement
vegetables picked in the afternoon
reaches Richmond before day-light
the next morning, Washington by
the breakfast hour, Baltimore and
Philadelphia in time for dinner and
New York only a little after midday.
This puts the truck on the
markets while still fresh and in
good shape, which means better
prices and greater satisfaction to
the grower, the commission merchant
and the consumer. The service
was inaugurated last Sunday
and is a daily service leaving here
at 6:42 o'clock in the afternoon and
going through without change to
the Pennsylvania station in New
York city.
Mr E L Wilks and family removed
to Mullins this week and will
make their home for the future in
that town. Mr Wilks is a quiet,
industrious man and a good citizen

home and assure him of our rewrnf

Mr J J Morris was called to
Charleston last Monday night.
In these days of plenty it were
well to remember that spiritual
and intellectual prosperity do not
flourish along with material prosperity.
A full head and heart are
more often found with an empty
stomach than with one filled with
the good things of the table, and
laked knees are more supple before
the Maker than those clothed
n velvet and fine linen.

Death of an Inlant.
Died?At the home of his parents,
Mr and Mrs W W Barr, near
Cooper postoffice, Sunday, May 8,
1910, at 10 o'clock p m., Harley
Theodore, aged nine months. The
funeral and iAterment took place
on Monday, at 4pm., the services
being conducted by Revs A CBridgman
and E E Ervin in the presence
pf a number of relatives and friends
of the bereaved parents. The little
life brightened the home only for
a few fleeting months, but long
enough to lignt the way as a
guiding-star to the realms of the
blest, to enter which, we are told,
our hearts must be as the hearts
of little children. The tiny fingers
beckon the heartsick parents to the
Father's throne, where, as a pure
and white-winged ambassador from
earth to heaven, their little one is
waiting to welcome them.
