J MOVEMENT TO CUT LOOSE FROM WILLIAMSBURG?PETITIONS NUMEROUSLY SIGNED. T -1- - p:*... If 1 O. T7 1 ^ iiy, may 10.?ror several months, it appears, there has been growing in this section a feeling that annexation to Florence county is desirable and to the best interests of the upper portion of Williamsburg county. The matter has been spoken of quietly for a considerable space, and it has now assumed definite shape. From all the information obtainable, the situation seems to be ' about as follows: As said above, the feeling of restlessness and desire to get iiy o Florence county has been increasing for some time, but positive steps to express this feeling in action were taken only lately. Last week,on learning that a movement was on foot to cut off from Williamsburg the area lying north of Lynch's lake, except that part of Lake township lying southeast of a line extending from T S Lee's * I place on Lynch's river to the Williamson crossing on the lake,; and add this to Florence county? ! on learning of this movement the : people on the south side of the lake and -vest of Singletary's swamp R concluded that the present was the time, to act and to go along with H their neighbors north of the lake, j Therefore, petitions were circulated J asking that all of that part of; j Williamsburg lying north of the j following lines, to wit: beginning on Lynch's river at Cat hole and running thence in a straight line to the mouth of Singletary swamp Lynch's lake; thence up Singleii ' i!r I jg I We Have Space Drj I 36=in. I This includes all the territory em-; braced in the movement first men- j tioned and extends the area so as to! take in all the territory north of the above described lines. We under-1 stand that these petitions have' been signed by a very large percent-1 age of the voters?in fact, by all' except one here and there. W. L. B. THE NEW BISHOPS. Dismissed Appeal to Nullify Rutledge County Flection. ' State ex rel McFadden against State board canvassers, respondent. Petition dismissed. Opinion by D E Hydrick, A J." The foregoing brief paragraph, which appeared in the daily papers last Friday tinder the caption "Su^^"N^ons," marks the c , at times heatec ,ne formation of an to be named Kut- j 1 jdge , with Lake City as the county seat. With the announcement of this decision of the highest court, what has been a foregone conclusion in the minds of those best posted on the stidus rerum ever since the hearing was held in January, becomes now an absolute certainty, and the effort to form the new county along the lines contended for has ultimately failed. The next move of the promoters of the new county, we understand is to hold an election looking to the annexation of certain portions of the "Rutledge" territory to? Florence county. Petitions for holding this election emanating from citizens of Scranton and vicinity are already in the hands of Governor Ansel, we are reliably informed, and it is reported that Lake City will join in annexation movement. All this means, of course, more surveys, more expense, more debt | and more taxes, which makes those j who have to foot the bill ponder as to where we are drifting and how far we will have to go before a halt is called. 5 or 6 doses "666" will cure any ; case of Chills and Fever. Benson, May 16:?This is the month of grass and the farmers usually have as much as they can Jo to clean it out and let the crops grow, but for the past few days :he cool weather has materially hindered both the young plants and grass from flourishing. However, we note considerably more im- ( provement in the stands of cotton than was observable ten days ago. Corn in this section bids fair for a fine harvest, if no serious disaster should happen. Chandler and Eric, are visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs J B Chandler, of this place. All of us, the older set of this community, remember the beauti-; ful and charming Miss Mabel: Chandler, whose winsome ways at-, tracted the New York author and ' ended in a romantic marriage to Mr Harben, whose books are rare examples of literary composition. The circumstances of Mr Harben's life have brought him into contact with all kinds of people and with widely dissimilar conditions, and he has not failed to take advantage of the opportunities thus afforded him.
