W BK .EF SKETCH OF CELESTIAL I VV ANDERER AT PRESENT VERY I ' MUCH IN THE PUBLIC EYE. f Through the courtesy of The American Book Company of New York we have received a phamplet Kcontaining ajhistory of Halley's comK*. from which we gather the following data, which will be interesting to a great number of our readers: Edmund Hailey, born in 1656, an1 English astronomer, discovered the | fact that the identity of the comet; that bears his name, seen by himself | in 1682, was the same as that ob-1 served by Kepler in 1607, and still I earlier by Aprian in the year 1531. | From these observations and dis-! coveries Hailey predicted that the j comet would re-appear in 1758 and aoh succeeding 75 years, approximately The last time the comet was visible was in 1835. Recent historical inquiry has developed the fact that no less than twenty-five returns of Halley's comet have been traced at average intervals of 76 years, extending backward from 1910 to 12 B C., the shortest period ^ being 74 1-2 years and the longest 1 79. j As to the comet's actual distance from us, on May 18, the time of nearest approach, the head of the comet is but 12,000,000 miles from the earth. Astronomically speaking this is a very near approach, onlyi one of the staid planetary bodies K^inor pvpr known to come so near. v-? On May 18, the comet transits the i sun, which is visible at such places, as are in daylight while the pass- J age is taking place. "If the comet really transits the sun, as is expected, and its constitution is unlike the great comet of 1882, an ill-defined dark spot may be seen against the disc of the sun, I progressing across it for an hour, or two; or even if Halley is very brilliant it the time, so that it can be followed up to the edge of the' sr may disappear there, as com-! The exact hour of the transit is unknown." On the same date, May 18, the earth is almost certain to plunge through the comet's tail, but it is doubtful if we have evidence of it from any phenomena of the sky. At least once before the eartt hamade a similar plunge and escap 1 1 ~ ^ Tl,n oun'o li'orht eu uiiutumeu. xuc juii o seemed dimmed and the sky was filled with a yellowish, auroral haze ? that was June 30, 1861. Our distance from the head of Halley's comet on May 18,is practically equal to what it was from the nucleus of the comet of'61. More than that we know nothing and cannot predict just what will happen, because the relative constitution of tne two comets is unknown. ?.11 astronomers are atrreed. however, that this conjunction of earth and j comet need occasion no alarm. Where to See the Comet. 1 April 19 to May 15: Comet west of sun and visible in the east before i sunrise. i May 10: Comet rises hours before the sun. | May 16: Comet probably disappears in the eastern dawn. Rises 1* hours before the sun. I May 18: Comet transits across the face of the sun, from west to east. " 1 May Perhaps visible in strong twilight in the northwest, im- J mediately after sunset. May 20" to 23: Visible in the1 northwest .after sunset and probably j at its brightest, though a tail of great length is hardly probable. In the Sbnw Piano we have succeeded in this very thing. The construction of the mounding board, together with the finest German steel strings, gives this piano a marvelous range of pure. ?ich, mellow tones. The heavy action-principle permits the bummer to strike the strings squarely and the result is the depth and power of its tone. The voicing controls the action-principle perfectly?and that is the r?al test of a good piano.
