A BOLD OUTRAGE"
Greelyvllle Man Struck Down by
Unknown Desperadoes.
Greelyville, April 27:?Mr Jasper
Ward was seriously wounded last
night by being struck on the back
of his head and in the pit of his
stomach with some heavy instrument.
He clerks for Mr M D DeLorme and
when he closed the store, abut 10
o'clock, he discovered several white
men lurking in the shadow of the
building, in the rear. He hailed
them, but got no response, so went
to his room at Mr S J Taylor's, and
secured a Wischester rifle and came
back to look for them. It is supposed
that when he came around
the corner of the building his assailant
was waiting for him and
struck him several severe blows.
The local lodge, was in session
within fifty yards of Mr DeLorme's
store when this happened.They heard
the report of Mr Ward's gun, which
went orT when he was struck down,
and hurried to the scene, but the
parties had made good their escape.
Bloodhounds were sent for and
were on the ground in less than
three hours, but the only ones obtained
were some puppies that were
not trained properly, so they could
make nothing of the trail.
Mr Ward "was sent to the hospital
in Sumter for treatment this morning,
but Dr I N Boyd, the attending
physician, entertains little hope of
his recovery. Mr Ward is from New
Orleans, La, having come here only
a few months ago. He has made
many friends, who wish for him a
recovery.
R' bberv is supposed to have been
motive of the men.
Later?Friday two strangers of
the "genus hobo" were arrested on
s ispicion, but were released after
being made to give an account of
themselves.
At last accounts Mr Ward was
esting easy and doing as well as
could be expected. Unless a backset
occurs it is now thought that
he may recover.
Crop Outlook Gloomy.
Crop conditions reported from
various sections of the county are !
discouraging, not to say alarming, [
for this season of the y< ar. In some '
sections there has be^n no rain to'
speak of since February and thej
moisture has been insufficient to j
sprout the seed in the ground, j
Where the rain has fallen, the frost
J
and cold nights have caused the!
plants to die and many fields have !
to be re-planted. A prominent 1
farmer in the lower r>art of the !
county told us Monday that this I
was the first year within his recollection
when he had no crop of
any kind up out of the ground this
late in the season.
The hot sun-shine of the past few ,
days has b.-e.i particularly dis- j
astrous to growing plants, causing
them to wither and die.
Truck of all kinds, garden vegetables,
cotton, corn and tobacco
plants?all have been damaged very
seriously, what little there was to
injure.
Althroagh the trucking section
beans, which should now be on the
market, have been retarded and i
the crop will be cut short. In many j
parts of the country this crop is said ;
to be a total failure.
Altogether the outlook is gloomy j
indeed, and unless the seasons be j
more propitious from now on, the
present year will spell disaster for
the farmers through this section.
An 11,000-ton ship running 15
miles an hour will consume 150 tons
of coal per day. A 30,000-ton ship
going 30 miles per hour will use
up 1,100 tons. Haste makes waste
at sea as well as elsewhere.
