'i S,. .. | PHELPS TAKEN TO JAIL. Will Be Tried for Bigamy at Next Term of Court. Friday morning A W Phelps wts committed to jail by Sheriff Graham in default of $700 bond. Here he will probably remain until the June term of court convenes when he will be tried for bigamy. The readers of The Record are familiar with the facts of this remarkable case. Phelps is still a helpless paralytic and his chances for immediate improvement seem slight. The case is an anomalous one, so that the authorities did not know just how to deal with it. Sheriff Graham, who has acted with marked humanity and circumspection in the circumstances, wired the Governor Ansel, but got little or no satisfaction; then Magistrate Wallace Went to Columbia and put the facts squarely up to the Governor, who shifted the re-t sponsibility from his office by referring the matter to Solicitor Stoll. It was on the advice of the Solicitor that Sheriff Graham served the warrant and committed Phelps to jail, removing him from his room at the Kellahan Hotel, where he has been quartered ever since the night after his Easter "wedding." % Won an Automobile. The following paragraph from the Charleston News and Courier Monday was read with more than ordinary interest by the people of Kingstree: "The Buick touring car, which was sold by the Army Cycle Com T .J pany to tne cjks ixxige, 01 una city, at faetory prices, through the medium of Mr J Heyward Lynah, an active and enthusiastic member of that lodge, has become the property of Mr J H Scott, of Kingstree, S C. Mr Scott is receiving the congratulations of his friends upon acquiring this handsome ma chine." Mr Scott we understand, has been offered $1,200 for the mac! in?. The ear was raffled at the Elks' Bazaar and Mr Scott was the lucky winner of the valuable prize, which cost him only a few dollars. The Same Here. Some years ago a contractor building a railroad in a warm climate was troubled a great deal by sickness among the laborers. He turned his attention at once to their food and found that they were getting full rations of meat and were drinking water from a stream near by. He issued orders to cut down the amount of meat and to increase greatly the quantity of Quaker Oats fed to the men. He also boiled Quaker Oats and mixed the thin oatmeal water with their drinking water. Almost instantly all signs of stomach disorders passed and his men showed a decided improvement in strength and spirits.
