# MMTER MAN ? EASY MARK. A SUCK SWINDLER RELIEVES CONFIDES'G CITIZEN OF HIS ROLLHOW IT WAS DONE. Sumter, April 8:?There are some easy marks i n Sumter, it seems. Recently a clairvoyant and palmist, giving his name as Prof J A Goodwin, ^^H^me here and advertised that he w ^was born under a double veil and could foretell the future of human kind, and for a fee would aid you to marry the one of your choice; te reunite lovers; to aid you in business and lawsuits; to aid in making investments. He opened up parlors and for 12 hours a day was kept busy serving- those who wanted to peep into the future. One of his specialties was aiding in the making of investments. Rumor has it that he numbers several among his victims. This much is certain: He succeeded in relieving one party of the handsome sum of $700. Report has it that this party visited the "Professor's" parlors and gave him a fee to assist in making an in' vestment. The victim was required to bring his money to the "Professor" that he might handle its every piece, and give it good luck. On the first visit the money was taken by the swindler and each bill was passed through his fingers. The money was then wrapped up and clipped into a pitcher; was taken out and left over night in the victim's safe. Next day it was opened and v\ was materially increased. The vic'' tira's eyes locked like saucers when he saw what had been done. The operation was repeated the next night and there was another increase. The victim seemed to have some doubt &bout it and the swindler took a ten-dollar bill from the bundle and sent him to the bank to get it changed. It passed muster at the bank. This operation was continued till the* sum was increased to $1,300. whole sum was taken and WTapped up by the swindler, wl o fcjok the bundle and passed it around head and thrust it into the pitcher again, all the time muttering unintelligible mystic words. He was aided by a confederate who assisted in the incantations. The package was again given to to the victim with the injunction not to open it tili a certain time. It was carefully put away in the safe and carefully guarded till the time set (for opening. When that time came, the package was taken out and opened. Imagine the disappointment of the victim when he found his good money had turned to worthless brown paper. ' The victim went out to find the swindler, but found that he had departed between suns, taking himself 1 to parts unknown.?Columbia hcc. m ^ ^ I* Monnc. There are yet farmers living here who buy corn and hay and flour ^ from the West! What does this mean? It means that the money that ought to go to the education of your child en, money that ought to be used in improving your homes, money that ought to be used to build that sandclay road which you didn't come to town on today, is I being used in those far Western States to educate people whose acquaintance you will never enjoy; , to make beautiful homes you will never live in and to build roads you will never ride over.?
