two banks in their recently publish?d
statements is worthy of attention,
being the surest indication of
the prosperous condition that obtains
generally in our community.
It is by? far the most creditable
showing yet made at the corresponding
season of the year by

Taking the figures published lest
veek we have for the two banks
combined: Loans and discounts,
?.534,551.39; surplus fund, $23,000;
jndivided profits, $12,212/77; individual
deposits, $409,457.27. Total

Lake City. March 30:?The fifth
annual meeting <>f the stock-holders
of the Farmers' and Merchants'
Bank was held yesterday. The
meeting was well attended. The
report of the cashier. T J Cottingham,
who came to the hank a little
over a year ago. was very good.
The deposits now were shown to
be 6164,413.14 as against 681,018.-'
47 on the same day of last year.'

bank has grown to be one of the

"One-School" DistrictsFor
several years I have urged
the forming of "one-school" districts
and the levy of a special
school tax. To my previous reasons
for advising this is added a recent
and strong one, viz: The policy of
the Legislature to give aid only to
those weak schools that levy a
special tax, and the regulation by
the State board of education allowing
aid to only one school in a district.
I believe this plan will be
permanent, and sincerely hope that I

tricts will take steps at once looking
towards one school district and the
voting of a special tax. The plan is
simple: Outline in a petition to the
county board of education the territory
desired in the new district(which
should contain from 15 to 20 square
miles), having it signed by one-third |
or more of the electors and free-!
holders in said territory, and unless
there are special reasons against the:
forming of such a district the petition
will be granted. To such dis-;
tricts the State aid will be as much
as they raise by special taxation,
but not to exceed $100.00.
I will be glad to attend anv meetings
called for the purpose of considering
changes along this line.
