On last Friday evening Mesdam^s
W G Gamble and W N Jacobs,teachers
of the dancing school, gave their
jupils and the*friends of the school

Schools In the County That Have
Qualified Under Garrls Act.
The County Superintendent of
Education announces that applications
will be made for all schools
in the county that levy a special tax
and said schools will pet as much
aid from the State as is raised by
special taxation, not to exceed $100,
provided the^ schools have not
sufficent funds to continue in
session for 100 days.
The schools named below have
raised the amounts opposite their
names in compliance with the terms
of the act under which this appropriation
is made:

Protests Against Improving an
Obsolete Highway.

A substantial new bridge at Black
Mingo, with its new rolling draw,
j will be opened to the public in a day
{or two. The architect, Mr J J Erd- j
dy, had a serious set-back by a spell,
of typhoid fever, and the 24-mile,
Haul of all the bridge timbers from
the Brown Brothers' mill was anoth-!

things of the past and green pine I
poles will have to do for bridge j
posts.
^ But a more important matter still j
is the condition of the old stage road
for about fiv? miles from Poplar
Hill to Rome, along the same old
zig-zag Indian trails, up and down
the sand hills and along the sknd
beds, used by the first settlers and
still adhered to by people who claim
to be civilized, when only about half
a mile away lies a pine level through ,
which a fine straight road can be
made, and which some have advocated
for years. And now I hear it
rumored that these same fearful
sand-beds are to be clayed. No! no!
Mr Editor, I protest?make a new (
road. I consulted an expert road- (
builder, the proficient Georgetown
county supervisor, Mr Johnson, and
he agrees that it is easier to make a
