THE SAGE OF POSSUM FORK
Was Disappointed in Not Seeing
j the Comet?Some Fast Traveling
Editor County Record:?
Mr Editor, I haw been straining
i my eyes of mornings before day tr
jret a hist look at the late comet or
the return trip from his immense
journey for another load of creation's
debris or sun fuel, but the
haziness and cloudiness of a month
back was too obscuring and I failed,
utterly failed, to get a glimpse
of the eccentric wanderer. I reckon
j though he is all right, unless he
failed to pass his perihelion and
actually plunged into our great
lumnary.
I am hoping, however, to see the
return of the next great comet,
soon due after an absence of nearly
three score years and ten, and
whose orbit extends far beyond the
connnes of Neptune, and was so
exceedingly elliptic, that, in its almost
direct homeward path, the
sun attraction gets up for it a speed
of 1.000 miles a seconi to insure
his passage around our great lumimary,
and be whirled again on its
I almost centennial round.'
Perhaps, Mr Editor, this is the
one whose tail is to swipe me along
with it, according to "Mr Clod
Hopper." But I want you to tell
him that when I start on the celestial
trip it will not be on such a
poke-easy speed as a comet's tail,
although we are unused to such fast
traveling, yet we are looking for
it i
a taster train over mere, wnere
speed has no confines. For even
here in this world, astronomers
count star distances by the number
of years it requires for light to
traverse the intervening space.
But light, even though it may
travel well on to 200,000 miles a
second, is a slow coach over there
when compared to extreme stellar
distances, and would require millions
of years to'get there." What then?
How travel if a streak of lightning
is too slow?
Well! take the?take the?
thought car.
"How fleet is a glanie of the mind!
Compared to the speed of its flight;
The tempest itself lags behind,
And the swift winged arrows of lignt"
SYes! take the thought car. It will
be rigged up all ready for service!
But, my! my! how will I ever get
back to?
Possum Fork.
