As a ship nears land after a trip
across the Atlantic inexperienced I
travelers are always in a ferment in j
regard to the proper tip to give
their various stewards. Of course j

cipient, though his looks may mean
much. I may say, however, that it
is customary to give the table stew- i

A Sailoi* Superstition.
'It's funny," remarked an old
skipper on the water front, ''how ancient
superstitions cling to the men j
who go to sea. Take, for instance, i
that shark's lin nailed to the tip of
the flying jibboom of that windjammer.
There's hardly any of the people
who come down to the docks on
a Sunday afternoon that don't look
and wonder at it. But few know
irtat it means to seafaring men.
Hfe a superstition as old as the art
of sailing and one in which all seaf
men believe. They think it takes
the ginger out of heavy seas when
the ship is shoving her nose under,
and they also believe that so long
as the shark's fin holds the vessel
, will nev >r be in a collision. It is a '
mascot which brings all good, betides
adding speed to the ship. A

'That seemed sensible advice. I i
got the prescription made up, and,
although I have eaten many a fake
meal on the stage and have drunk
many a pint of fake wine, never
once have I taken a dose of fake

A Sensitive Policeman.
An irascible policeman of Paris
arrested a peaceful citizen for caking
him a "geometrician." The
citizen was bilking rather loudly to
the proprietor of an old curiosity
shop, with whom be was at variance
as to the value of alleged antiquities
offered for sale in the estab
lisliment. me policeman in an excess
of zeal entered the shop and
expostulated with the citizen for
shouting at the top of his voice.
"You are a geometrician," was
the retort of the person addressed.
*^What is that vile name you called
me ?" queried the policeman.
"Go and study Euclid/' replied
the* other, who was then seized by
the collar of his overcoat anil
marched to the station. There the
too sensitive policeman was informed
by his superior officer that there
was not even a shadow of a case
against the person arrested.

; Whistling and Weeping Trees.
Among the curiosities, of tree life
is the 6ofar or whistling tree of Nubia.
When the winds blow over
this tree it gives out flutelike
sounds, plaving away to the wilderness
for hours at a time strange,
weird melodies. It is the spirit of i
the dead singing among the
branches, the natives say, but the
scientific white man says that the
sounds are due to a myriad of small
holes which an insect bores in the
spines of the branches.
The weeping tree of the Canary j
islands is another arboreal freak.
This tree in the driest weather will ^
rain down showers from its leaves, |
and the natives gather up the water
from the pool formed at the
foot of the trunk and find it pure
and fresh. The tree exudes the water
from innumerable pores at the
