Blitor Ajer, who is also tbe pablaher of his newspaper, the Florscce Daily Times and allied areekly publications, announces that be will let the contract at once for the erection of a modern, story horns for his newspapers. The building will he equipped with steam heat, hot wad cold water and elevator service. Friend Ayer modestly announces that he is now in a fair way to realize the fruits of twenty yean of arduous and unremitting toil. We congratulate our contemporary most heartily on the prosperity that these plans bespeak. Certainfy one who has been in harness for twenty years deserves such a reward for his efforts as seems to hav? fcttondpd Kditor Aver in his business affairs. Without the least tinge of envy <for our friend's good fortune, we nay say that having already given Bear!/ twelve of the best years of our life to the editorial sanctum, are have no very sanguine hope of attaining to the degree of aucct-ss indicated by his being able to plan toe construction of such a building as he contemplates, even should we be" able to keep up the griud for another eight year* The best we can hope for is to be able to meet our weekly pay-roll and hare enough left over to keep the Sheriff from levying on toe plant. Unr friends are ofttimes more candid than sweet. The tish are biting, gentle Annie, and soon also will be the .mosquitoes. ^ La ?tetis county has organized a boys' corn clu'tf with a membershij of* 13*? youths. That looks like 1 usicess. If some people who want to vote tbe country dry would first vote themselves dry things would be .a whrde lot better. Mr J C Graham's phenomenal yield of seventy-six five hundj red weight bales of cotton on j fitty*four acres but carries out The Record's oft iterated claim that the possibilities of Williamsburg's soil and climate, under 'intelligent cultivation, are surpassed by that of no other county 1 in the S'ate ' ===== The great Doctor Hathaway of Atlanta?you ve heard of him. It seems that he "hath-away" to relieve the unwary wayfarer of his superfluous coin with neatness and despatch. The Record several years ago refused to accept an advertising contract for this con. eern, which to our mind spelled Q-u-a-c-k. Our esteemed Florence contemporary, the Daily Times, exhibits a considerable degree of nerve in claiming Mr J H Woodberry, of JohnsonTille, for Florence county, when as a matter of fact he was being educated at the expense of'this county?being one of the two beneficiary cadets at the Citadel Academy apportioned to Williamsburg?when he won the West Point scholarship. Last week we reproduced from the Johnston News-Monitor an article about comets, and inadvertently omitted to give credit to our contemporary for the<(bor row." We regarded the article as a?.rather, illuminating p one on . a subject that is. just at the present time, of uncommon interest. In a brief compass Brother Bailey told several very interesting and i informing things about comets and it affords ns pleasure tc give hiss. paper the credit tc which it is justly entitled. Quoth our always interesting contemporary, the Florence Times, in a recent issue: "Rockefeller is arranging to return to the J most needy of the people the fortune that he wrested .for the masses through the most wonderfully organized charity that has ever been undertaken, etc." Touching the foregoing remarkable assertion we are curious to know from / Friend Ayer first, where he got the idea that John D? the head devil of the Standard Oil monopoly, ever wrested anything for the masses in the process of his benevolent assimilation of their earnings; second, it wonld be equally interesting to know through what "organized charity" the aforesaid John D was able to "wrest for the masses" his enormous fortune. k Birthday Function. Miss Jane Gilland was "at home" to her little friends Friday afternoon, the occasion being the celebration of her third birthday. About eighteen or ; twenty children were gathered i on the lawn and several hours ! nf pninvpd in thp ikii.i1 ! childish fashion. Dainty refreshments were | served at prettily appointed tables, with pink as the dominant color effect?pink cream, pink cake, the birthday cake, a thing of beauty and artistic con struetion, being ornamented with j three pink candles, corresponding to the number of years which (have coine unto the winsome little hostess. A Timely Protection. Everyone knows the after effects of La Grippe are often more dangerous than the. disease. So often it leads to pneumonia, which a weak heart action makes fatal. Although the negro's neck was broken, the mob pot a rope about the neck and dragged the body through the streets till they were tired; then they hauged it to the Elks' Memorial arch. Former United States Senator Thos C Piatt died suddenly at hia home in New York city Saturday afternoon. Prof A B Cooke, jrmerly of Spartanburg, S C., has been appointed consul to a city in Greece. .William Bilting, a young white man living at Buffalo, near.Union, in a drinking bout Friday night of last week, shot and probably fatally wounded hia wife. At Charlotte, N C., last week in broad daylight and on one of the principal thoroughfares of the city, negroes held up and assaulted a white woman and her child, robbing them of their pocket books. This is one of a series of outrages that have recently been committed in the same vicinity and the perpetrators made good their escape. The Horry Herald last week told a harrowing tale of a negro family named Mention being burned to death in the ruins of their cabin. The tragic occurrence took place near the Kenawba Lumber Com* pany'a plant, in that county, and the whole family of seven members are said to have perished in the flames. ^.The head of the-family, Mention, was a faithful employee of the Kenawba Lumber Company and the whole affair seems to be shrouded in mystery. A pistol duel was fought on the court house square at Edgefield Monday, while court was in session, in whi' i W F VaDce killed Horace Lammond, the latter being wounded in the hand. Both the men were prominent farmers of Edgefield county and the shooting was the culmination of a quarrel over a debt that Vance claimed Hammond owed him. Ten shots ?? c?i --- IL. ??.1?J were ureu uu iuc uiunucu puuuu square, but fortunately Jno "inuocent by-etander" was hurt. Three negroes were lynched by enraged Floridians Monday for being concerned in the killing of two deputy# sheriffs and the fatal wounding of another, near Palmetto, in that State.
