SENATOR R R TILLMAN ! DANGEROUSLY ILL; HAS RECOVERFD HIS SPEECH-ONE SIDE PARALYZED-DAILY REPORTS OF HIS CONCITION. The serious illness of Senator Tillman is watched by hundreds of sympathizing friends in this county with grave concern and all are awaiting with deep anxiety the latest news concerning his condition. For the benefit of our readers we give below a brief history of the case from the first attack of his malady up to our hour of going to. press. Washiugtcn, February 1<>:?: Senator Tillman of South Carolina, j was taken suddenly ill on the steps J of the Capitol today and had to be! carried into his room by two Capitol; employes. Later he was removed to his home, where he is now under the care of a physician. The attack today is said to have been' 1 ' ~ ^ 4-Ur. Tillman's home it was said the; Senator was feeling much better. Washington, February 17:?The; Senator is gradually growing worse. He has not been able to speak since 9 o'clock hst night. While there is no immediate danger, the family are alarmed and have telegraphed for Dr .1 W Bubcock, of Columbia, Mr Tillman's family physician, to come here as speedily as possible. Washington, February IS:?Reports from the bedside of Senator Tillman at noon indicate that he is in a serious condition. Progressive paralysis ami iiis organization of th^ nervous system are ths causes. He was reported unconscious since last night. Members of the family , have been telegraphed to come at once to Washington. The South Carolinian is suffering from* a clot of blood on the brain, the pressure of which is producing paralysis. Dr E F l'ickford, the attending physician, stated late this afternoon' that the Senator was a very ill man. Unless the clot is dissolved within a short period it is believed that Mr Tillman's condition is hopeless. In addition to the inability to articulate, paralysis on the right side is a little more pronounced today. Only Tillman's relatives and closest friends are permitted to see him. Washington, February 19:? The condition of Senator R Tillman, ' V TT continrie8 extremely grave, ne passed a fairly quiet night. The only unfavorable symptom developed was the loss of consciousness shortly before midnight. No change in his condition in this respect occurred with the break of day. He was unable to recognize anyone ibis morning, and this increased the sorrowful burden of the loved ones Sarroonding him. Dr Fickford said today that the Senator had a chance of recovery, but that was about all. It is not believed that there is any immediate danger of a fatal turn in bis illness. Even should he recover, the inability to articulate will be the saddest feature of his illness; in all probability he will not complete ly regain the power of speech, and will ueyer again be able to voice his honest convictions by the vitriolic invective for which he has beaoine noted throughout the land. rieury tJ and >allie Alay rillman, son aid daughter of the Senator, reached their father's bedside early today. They were summoned by telegraph yesterday from Greenwood, S 0. The Senator's wife and their eldest son, Henjamiu II Tillman, Jr., have been with him since the inception of his illness. Washington, D C., February 20:? When Dr Babcock reached Senator Tillmans's apartment at the Balfour V r this morning for the first consultation of the day, he was greeted with the salutation, "Hello, Doctor, how are you?" from the patient. Senator Tillman has continued to improve since last night, with the result that the 11 o'clock bulletin this morning showed marked progress. At 4 o'clock this afternoon, and again at s o'clock, extra bulletins were issued, each of which showed continued improvement on the pare of Senator Tillman. As a result of this rail v. oat onlv the members of the immediate family but hundreds of friends in this and other cities who have shown the greatest interest in the case, were extremely delighted. Dr Babcock's arrival yesterday appears to have acted upon the Senator in a wonderful way. From the time he reached the Balfour up to the present Senator Til. man has shown marked improvement, and there is little doubt that Dr Babcock's presence, which at first Senator Tillman did not appear to notice, has done wonders. It is probable, therefore that he will remain here until there is a decided change one way or the other. Although marked improvement has been shown during the last twenty-four hours, a close watch will still be necessary until the crisis, which is expected possibly to-morrow night or Tuesday. While I his friends hope that to-day ?s improvement will be permanent, it i: ' still recognized that he is dangerous ly ill and may pass away with but 1 little warning. Washington, February iM:? Th< continued improvement in the con dition of Senator Benjamin E Tillmau, of South Carolina, has inspired renewed hop? of ultinrau recovery from his present serious ili uess. In the opinion of his physicians the chances are now much in hi: ! favor. There has been some abatemen' of the paralysis and to-day he re gained the use of his right arm ant : leg to a limited extent. The aphasu has markedly improved, and he i: now able to speak.
