The bill for closing up the (lis-J pensuries of this and other coun- j ties that voted out legalized liquor selling (and seemingly voted in blind tigers) last summer, passed the Legislature aud unless some ' quibble comes up that is not ap-' parent just now, the fourteen thousand dollars held up by the: officious interference of the State dispensary winding-up commission will soon be paid over to the towns and county, which will 8top the expense that has been eatiug up the money ever since the dispensaries were closed. We understand that during all this time the couuty dispensary board and their clerk have been drawing their full pay right along, although they have had everything in shape to turn over and were ready to step down and out ever sinoe the stock ar.d fixtures were closed out. The money is in the banks drawing no interest, we are it.formed, w hile the towns and the county, to whom it rightfully belongs, are "broke" and have to borrow money ami, of course, pay interest 011 ii. No one can blame the county board in the matter, as they would have long since turned over " ' l...? f/\r fha IlloriHlp. lue uiouej out ivi vuv ? some ''butting in'' of that winding-up commission, which seems to be wound up to run perpetually. The Legislature, after all, failed * to euact the bill requiring the promoters of new couuties to bear the' expense of survey, electiou, et cetera. Senator Appelt's bill passed the Senate and Representative Aver's bill, which was practical J ~ r ly 'the same, went through the House without opposition. Yet, somehow, amid the rush and confusion of the last week, ttie bill got lost in the shuffle. This bill, which it seems to us was a very editable measure, would no doubt have saved the tax-payers of this county considerable future expense. Already we are saddled with a debt of OTer $2,000 for the Hutledge effort, aud now, we understand, our Olanta friends are actively at work launching their new county boom, which if persevered in will mean another tnousaud or two thrown away paying surveyors, commissioners, etc. When is this thing of piling up the bujr^en of taxation to stop? liflOQ TIMES AT HE5S0N. Song of Marion's Men BY WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT. Our band is lew, but true and tried; ! Our leader frank and bold; The British soldier trembles 1 When Marion's name is torn. Our fortress is the good greenwood, Our tent the cypress tree; We ki.ow the forest 'round us, As the seaman knows the sea. We know :?s walls of thorny vines, Its gla( is of reedy grass; Its safe awl silent islands Within the dark morass. * * * Well knows the fair and friendly iroon The band that Marion leads? , The glittering of their rifles. The scampering of their steeds. 'Tis life to guide the fiery barb Across the moonlight plain; 'Tis life to feel the night wind That lifts his tossing mane; A moment in the British camp? A moment and away Back to the pathless forest, Before the break of day. Grave men they are by broad Santee, Grave men with hoary hairs. Their hearts are all with Marion, For Marion are their prayers. And lovely ladies greet our band With kindliest welcoming, With smiles like tho?e of summer, And tears like those of spring. For them we wear these trusty arms, And lay them down no more Till we have driven the Briton Forever from our shore. Sore Langs and Raw Langs.
