A TERRIBLE TRAGEDY.
Wife of Harpers Physician Killed by
Being Mistaken for Robber.
Georgetown, September 5:?News
was brought to the city this morning
of a terrible accident which on
o "
curred at Sunnyside, on Mnrrell's
Inlet, about 8 o'clock last night.
Mrs Bigham, wife of Dr G C Bigham,
of Harper's, S. C., was shot
and instantly killed by Mr Wm
Avant, the owner of Sunnvside, who
mistook her for a burglar.
Dr Bigham was in attendance
professionally at the home of Mi
Avant, and took his wife with him.
Last evening after supper the two
men were on the front porch. Thev
saw in the darkness a figure passtht
house and go towards the creek,

ply. They then secured a doublebarrelled
gun and followed, Di
Bigham expressing the fear that
they might get shot themselves.
They proceeded and saw the figure
apparently crouch close to the ground
near the ereek^bank. They again
called out but heard no response.
Avant asked Dr Bigham what he
must do. Bigham, it is asserted,
said ''shoot it," and Avant fired
both barrels at the object at a distance
of about 12 feet.
Both men then ran back to the
house. Not finding Mrs Bigham
there, a light was secured and they
returned to the fatal spot to find
ber stretched upon the sand dead.
Both barrels had taken effect in
her back, even the gun. wads having
penetrated the flesh. Avanl
came to town with the news, and
accompanied Deputy Sheriff Ward
and Coroner Fletchers to Murrell'i
Inlet. They are expected here to
night with the body.
