IUU D. fir TALKS WITH JOBNSONVILLE.
iflures and Facts That Lannot be
: Gotten around oo a New Coonty
Proposition with Rosemary as the
County Seat.
itor County Record:?
re see through your columns that
lsonvilie, Rome and Lambert
. very much outspoken against
ue formation of liutledge county,
leheving that these friends have
rawn conclusions rather hastily,
nd that a more mature cousidera
^^ption would help to point out to them
r errors not now apparent, we make
|| . bold to give them a heart-to-heart
^.talk, believing that in a '-multitude
of council there is safety."
Friends, to begin with, you want
to know in what way and manner
? will the formatiou of Kutledge county
benefit you?you as a people?you
as a section of the county. We are
frank to answer you, in some re>
spects much, in others but little. In
school improvement you could
expect very little beyond what you
have and what you obtaiu by your
own local efforts. Iu roads improvement
you have much to gaiu and
nothing to lose. Upon this one point
hinges your progress, your development
and your finances, more than
any other.
A good road shorteus distances,
saves wear and tear on vehicles,
beast and man. No State, county or
community is at its best until ber
roads are fully developed. Williamsburg
is roads poor?that is plain to
every one. It is a case of forty acres
to the mule, an obsolete and back
date method of farming. Divide
the farm and work two mules where
only one worked belore. Moral, yote
for Rutledge.
The county seat is really a small
matter, but in this you could expect
no great amount of benefits only in
letter roads and a few miles saved
in distance, both sufficient to make
you vote for Rutledge.
We calculate that taxes would be
K^eut the same as last year without
increased expense of Williamsnrg
this year which amounts to
>,222.74.
|Your farm property will advance
value and jo a short while yoii will
able to sell at much higher prices.
H^Koaog men, how can yon afford to
^ Hpte against Rutledge?
Bnl we hear you say, "We want
a county seat down here. That is
why we intend voting against RutB
ledge. We need it moie than Lake
B City." Friends, yon are right, you
want it and you need it. Lake City
B knows that only too well. We wish
B that it were possible for you to have
[H- it, but the conditions are such that
you cannot get it. Gyerything says
B ."impossible!"-not only impossible
for you but if you defeat Rutledge
|B|g|he whole territory will remain WilB
liamsburg for this generation and
perhaps several more. In fact, we
^Bbelieve Lake City will eventually be
the county seat for Williamsburg ip
Hi cas^f defeat of Rutledge, You
"impossible, cra/.y man!"
^^Hten!
^ ^nVny voter who will take down a
Hip of Williamsburg and follow ns
fl^^Br a few moments and is not con^^^winced
that this assertion is not only
B possible but very probable should
vote against Rutledge. We want
the other fellow's vote, not yours.
(sten! Rosemary, a thriving
j town at the juncture of the
t Company's R R with the
getown & Western R R, has
new dwellings going up today,
^yesterday a friend said, "Those
Lies are making parks out of
>onds." What does it mean??
hand of progress filled with
hern capital placed upon a
hern pond for development
ress spells a new county and
ty of money means "we will get
|wewant." Now, then, Ruti
is defeated, Johnsonville says
ill wait ten years and then it
8 our try. But what does the
ikee" behind Rosemary say:
will try today!"
u exclaim "impossible"?the
rements cannot be met nnless
take us in; we wonld obtain the
court house. This point, Mr Voter,
is decided by ballot, but they do nol
need you. You would be a stumbling
block. Your property is not a*
valuable as that above Lanes emI
bracing the Central R R.
How could they obtain this new
county? you ask. Follow us and
you shall see. Begin at Mingo
bridge, run the llutledge line up
Mingo swamp and White Oak to the
township line of Turkey and King.
Run this township line at a distance
of eight miles from court house to
Black river, up the river to the angle,
thence straight across to the
north-west, passing Suiters one mile
to the nofth to a point j ust north of
where the Central road enters Williamsburg
at the Clarendon line.
Thence around the county boundary
to San tee river, down San tee to a
point opposite Sampit station; thence
across Georgetown county to the
"whirl*' on Black river, down Black
river to where Mingo creek empties:
up Miugo creek to the bridge. There
you are! A county embracing about
620 square miles, 70 miles of
railroad and a sufficient population
to meet every requirement. The
area, the property valuation and the
inhabitants are met.
This would leave old Williamsburg
with about 508 square miles?
(Tunison's map of S C) 30 miles of
A C L railroad with Alderman's and
Wilson's trams.
The "over the river' political
question would be solved in Williamsburg?Rosemary
would be made the
<vmnff7 coal- .Tnhnannville and Lake
City would be doomed until the constitution
of the State was chauged
on requirements for a new county.
Now, friends, this letter means
to the voters of Johnsonville, Lambert
and Indiantown just what the
sign on a railroad crossing means
when it says, Stop! look! listen!
Will you do it?
Now, friends, we have this proposition
to make, Tal*e this whole
question up with the "Sage of 'Possum
Fork" and after He has made a
thorough canvass of what we have
said, and put it to a mathematical
and logical test, it he says we are
wrong, cast your ballot against Rutledge,
If he says we are reasonably
correct, don't let the influence of the
mercantile interest of your section
l L t?
Keep you iroui voirug *vi kuucu^
county.
That our position may be clearly
seen on this new county question we
submit that we are not now nor ever
will be a politican. We have never
offered ourself for an office nor
would not accept anything if we
could in the keeping of Rutledge
county, should she succeed. Our
position is clearly that of the "greatest
good to the greatest number."
We expect to share in the general
prosperity of a new county, share
and share alike with our neighbors
and friends.

A Fitting Elegy for Editor Starr's Pet
1 Project.
Editor County Record: ?
l Permit me to occupy a short space

of telling our friends and the public
generally, that Mr Stewart Starr in
'his leugthy "address,''circulated in
1 ? ?? ? /v nanat* linflut* ilofa
I a SUppifIllCllt IU UJO yaym uuuti uati i
J of August (J, has made several gravej
J errors, but as only one is vital at i
j this time, will touch upon that,
i Mr Starr says that "the Olanta
county scheme" is an impossibility
tor a number of reasons, the princi-'
pal one being that they have not, |
and cauuot get, the area necessary i
for the formation of a new county. ;
Does Mr Starr give us credit for so!
little sense? Does he think that I
we would work as hord as we have
done unless we knew what we were
doing? For Mr Starr's benefit, as
well as^forihe benefit of the public,
I wil .at as a matter of fact, we
not 01 j have the necessary area, etc., j
but that a survey and a map of the j
proposed territory have been made.
Mr Starr also says that part of
Mott's as well as Douglass townships
are knocking to get into Kutledge j
county; 1 think that what Mr Starr J
must have meant to say was that thej
two above mentioned are "knocking*'
Rutledge county. In his "grand
finale." Mr Starr speaks of being in
a certain historic graveyard while
writing his "Address" and I think
it was a fitting place to write Hutledge
county's obituary; and unbidden,
comes to my mind the old familiar
lines: "Hark, from the tomb, a
doleful sound!"

This beautiful land of the free,
, bought with our father's blood and

, is tugging at the ends thereof to see
if there is a rotten link to cause the
ruin and downfall of our proud,
free nation. The chain is no stronger
than its weakest link. Am I to
be the rotten link in this democracy?
Shall T, wilth my vote eustaiL the
