FLYING MACHINE MAKES
TEN MILE FLIGHT.
DLL SPEED RECORDS BROKEN AND
GOVERNMENT 1EST FULFILLED?
GREAT ENTHUSIASM MANIFESTED
Washington. July 30:?Orville
Wright this evening attained the!
zenith of hard earned success. In a
ten mile cross-country flight in the
famous aeroplane, built by himself j
> and his elder brother. Wilbur, and [
accompanied by Lieut Benjamin I),
Foulois, an intrepid oflicer of the!
army signal corps, he not only surpassed
the speed requirements of hisj
contract with the I'nited States
Government, but accomplished the
most difficult aud daring flight ever
planned for a heavier-thanair flying
machine. Incidentally he broke all
speed records over a measured course.
And he established beyond disputethe
practicability of an aeroplane in |
time of peace aud in time of war. j
His speed was over 42 nnlts an j
hour; be made ttie ten-mile nigntj
from Fort Meyer and back m 14
minutes and 4*2 seconds, including i
the more than twenty seconds re- j
quired for the turn beyond the line
at Shuter Hill, the southern end of 1
the course. He attained a height
in crossing the valley of Four Mile
Kun of nearly 5()0 feet, and the average
altitude of his practically level
conrse was about 200 feet above the
ground.
President Taft, who had become
an enthusiastic speotator of the aeroplane
trials, although two years ago
when Secretary of War, he is said to
have expressed to officers profound '
scepticism as to the accomplishment '
of such a feat as that of which today
he saw the completion, arrived ^
upon the parade ground at Fort
Meyer just in time to see the aero,

the triumphant aviators. He sent

Meeting Solid Against Rutledge.
Lambert, August 2:?There wae
a mass meeting h^re Friday night,
called for the purpose ot discussing
the new county movement. The
meeting was largely attended, not
only by the people of our immediate
neighborhood, but by the most influential
men of Rome, Indiantown,
Johnsonville, Chapman and Outland.
All expressed themselves against
the formation of Rutledge
county, and not a single man was in
favor of the new county nor did any
oue know any man in their section
who was going to vote for same..
We certainly feel proud of our
people and are glad to see tbetn sc
entfiused over ibe matter and determined
no to be intluenced by the
false doctrine that Lake City is trying
to preach. All are going tc
vote right on the 17th of August
and feel fully confideit they are going
to win,
W C Hemingway, M D.

' Now, if I be allowed the privilege,
I will briefly discuss this

First, the question a1
rises, would the new county be
' a benefit to us? To this question
we say emphatically, no!
We would be no nearer the counJtyseat
than we are now; we
! could get no better use of the
county funds than we are now
1 getting; not as many county
officers could come from among
us, as it is generally known that
every male citizen of Lake City
is going to be elected to a big
office. And, again, we shall
have our already sufficiently
taxed property double taxed for
the express purpose of building!
a jail and court house for Lake j
City.
