Funny how many people send <

Friday afternoon Miller McFadden,colored,of
the Workman
section, brought his two little
children,aged respectively about I
two and four years, to Drs Gamble
and Jacobs for treatment for
poisoning caused by eating Paris
green. The little negroes were
dangerously ill and it took sev- j
eral hours of strenuous work to
puil thein through. At last accounts
they were getting along
all right.
A preliminary hearing in the
case of the State vs P M Lee
and C P and T H Johnson,
charged with arson, was held in
Lake City last Friday before
Magistrate Eaddy. A probable
case being made out, the defendants
were bound over to the
court of general sessions and
the amount of the bond was
tixed at $1,500 by Judge John S
Wils n. The bond was at once
arranged and the defendants
were released.
According to the published reports
of stock on hand in the
several counties operating county
dispensaries, there was on
June 30 only $6,010.44 in the
three Williamsburg dispensaries.
This is the smallest stock reported
in any of the dispensary
:ounties. The largest stock on
sand is in Richland county,
564,448.38. This speaks well inieed
for the conservative management
of our county dispensary
board.
Correspondents will kindly
Dear in mind that it is customary
for the editor to write head
lines to an article. There are
several, reasons for this, the
principal one being that they are
arranged according to a regular
Form which escapes the notice
Df the average correspondent
and consequently the headlines
that he or she furnishes do not
ronform to our regular style and
nar the appearance of the
printed page. The writing of
leadlines is ot itself an art in
cvhich it requires years of trainng
to become proficient.

A PLEASING COMEDY.
The "Union Depot" Played by Local
Talent Makes a Hit
i
On Friday evening, July 16,
' the farce comedy, "The Union
| Depot,"' was presented at the
Thomas opera house by Miss
Myrtle Mae Critchtield ot Indiana,
assisted by about 75 Kingstree
amateurs. The opera
house was pretty well tilled
and quite a neat sum realized
I tor the Civif League, under the
auspices of which the performance
was given. The showwas
well presented and showed
that there had been much hard
[studying done by the participants,
as there had been only a ,
few rehearsals.
1 There was very much of a
mixed cast in the "Union Depot"
and all the parts were :
played so well that it would be
unjust to mention some and
not all, which lack of space
precludes. i
The specialties were splen- i
did. The show was opened J
with "Red Wing," sung by a
chorus in Indian costume.
Another chorus, "Pride of the
Prairie Mary,'" was given in
cowboy's costume by eight' \
young ladies, which was en- 1
cored very liberally by the au- ,
dience. A fan drill and chorus 1
i
by about twenty little girls was
also nicely rendered. Two
beautiful vocal solos, "Goodnight
Sweet Dreams" by Miss
Belle Ervin and "Glorious
France," by Miss Eleanor Gourdin,
elicited well deserved
plaudits. Miss Harper performed
on the piano.
Miss Critchtield, who worked
so faithfully getting up the
play, deserves credit for the
performance. Miss Critchfield
is a young lady of winning personality
and made lots of
triends here during her short
stay, who would be glad to see
her return.
Tortaret on a Horse.
