Capt W D Fitch, formerly
warden of the county jail,was in
town several days this week exchanging
greetings with his
friends. Capt Fitch and his family
moved from Kingstree to
their home near Lake City sev
eral weeks ago.
The first "cured" tobacco we
have seen this season was
brought to this office on Friday,
June 18, by London Burgess, a
colored farmer of the Hebron
section. The sample leaves
6how a good color and are fine
specimens for this early in the
season.
Judge Gage, in his charge to
the grand jury, expressed gratification
at the great improve
ment in the condition of the
court house square in contrast
with its former dilapidated and
ill-kempt appearance. We also
heard numerous expressions
from out of town people complimentary
to the beautiful court

Kingstree has the kindest
feeling for neighboring tobacco
markets, but she is out for a
share of the crop soon to be
marketed and if square dealing
and an honest effort to get the
highest prices for the farmers
count for anything, a good percentage
of the crop will come to
this market.

Mrs Mary J Porter died Wed- j
nesday afternoon, June 23, at '
4 o'clock. Her death was the 1
culmination of a long siege 1
of illness, marked by intense ?
suffering, which she bore with 1
that patience and fortitude *
which can be shown, only by s
one whose spirit has con z
quered the frailties of the flesh s
and overcome the terror oi the
last great enemy, death, through s
the grace of the divine Master. 1
Only a few weeks ago Mrs Por- r
ter suffered the loss of her sis- *
ter, Mrs Alice Pendergrass, and
in her enfeebled state, she never c
I rallied from the shock, but *
gradually grew weaker until c
the end came. e
Mrs Porter was the widow of *
Edwin J Porter, Esq. She is sur- c
vived by two sons, Mr C L Por- 1
ter of Florence and Mr James E a
Porter of Kingstree, and two a
daughters, Mrs J T Nelson and ^
Miss Minnie Porter of Kingstree. ^
She leaves also two brothers,Mr ^
E R Lesesne of Greelyville and ^
Mr S M Lesesne of Texas. c
The funeral services will take s
place at the late residence of ^
the deceased this (Thursday) ?

tion Swearingen has received a
number of maps of the United .
States, which were secured from
the interior department by Senator
Tillman. These maps will be distributed
to all schools of the State
making application for them as long
as the supply lasts. The maps are
very comprehensive, live by seven
feet, giving all the island possessions
of this country and also a map of
the Panama Canal.

DIED OK THE TRAIN.
Mrs. Elizabeth Singietary Passes Away
Going from Lake City to FlorenceMrs
Elizabeth Singietary died
on the train from Lake City here
Monday evening.
Mrs Singietary had been in
bad health for some time, and it
was thought that if she would
:ome up here for a while she
would improve. Iler family and
physician there, agreed to her
undertaking the trip, but it was
too much for her and she died
from heart failure before the
