Report ot Rutledge County Commission Filed Witt) the 6overnor. Mr Stewart Starr of Lake City, secretary of the commission in re the formation of Kutledge county,! was at the Governor's office today J filing the report of the commission, j riiJo unniif otiADD fViat- prpru <v?n 1 U1D icpuiv suvno VMMW v - v. J ? I stitutional provision has been complied with; that the proposed new county has an area of 404.94 sq miles and has a population of 14,516 according the census of 1900. Rutledge county, if formed, will have a smaller area than Calhoun has, by several square miles, but willI have considerably more taxable; property and population than that i county. The cost of the official survey was $1,800 against Williams-1 burg, $180 against Florence and $144 against Clarendon. While no part of Florence is now included in the proposed new county, having been eliminated by amendment to the petition, Florence will have to pay for the work done in this coun-1 ty before the change was made. | The Marion survey, in re Dillon county, cost nearly $7,000, we are told. Now that the commission has turned in a favorable report to the Governor, the law is that he has 20 days in which to order an election which must be held in sixty days thereafter, though the election may be set for an earlier date after having been advertised for 30 days. ?Florence Times, June 21. Messrs (J H Brockinton and W J | Worshani, two prominent young j business men of Olauta, were inj Kingstree Monday and paid me! Record office an agreeable visit, Mr Brockinton beiDg a native of Wiliamsburg, was much gratified at the grow th and improvement here which had taken place since his last visit to Kingstree. Both these young men are enthusiastic advocates of the proposed new county with Olanta as the county seat. 01ant? Olanta as the capital. Being formed from parts of Florence, Clarendon, Snmter and Williamibnrg, they say that no old connty will snffer materially from loss of area, while they ! will have one of the most compact I counties in the State. The area pro* I posed to be taken from hes been surveyed and a map made, Which shows that Olanta is very nearly in tne centre of the territory that she seeks and that the average distance from the county seat is not over ten miles. Under present conditions the people of the area affected have to go from 15 to 2 miles to their county seat. 1909 RE REO Roadster made trip fr worth of gasoline and oil.dista Ask to be shown. Messrs Brockiutou and Worsham , went on to say that a report had been started that Olanta had raised j money to try to "buy up"' the people of Sandy Grove in the approaching electiou. They reseut the insinuation j with the scorn it deserves. They j hold the peop'e referred to in too: high esteem to have ever thought of SQch a scheme, even were they themselves base enough to desire it. The mere suggestion is an insnlt to the good people of Sandy Grove and the suggestion did not come from Olanta. The people of Olanta claim that their town is admirably suited for a county seat. They are now erecting a $5,000 school building and the progressive people are planning many other improvements. The climate is healthy and the population of the town increasing rapidly. Now we ought to tarn oar attention to flies. The little biting pest has gone and along witjs it chill and fever as the direct re salt of oar system of storm sewers, and onr town is now justly regarded as the best drained and most healthful in the whole country. Of this we are proud, but we ought not to stop, so long as the flies are with us. The common house fly is not only the active disseminator of the noxious typhoid fever germs and therefore should be put down, but he is the most annoying of all the ills of the ? --'1 wvknriU f/\ + VlA rllQ. dummer ?iju nuus uutu w mv. U.H comforts of warm weather. And it can be exterminated with compare- , tive ease. A little intelligence and strict enforcement of sanitary regulations will accomplish this object. There is no gainsaying the fact that the laws of the United States are better enforced than our State laws. All dread the Federal courts much more than onr circuit courts. Here in South Carolina the jurors in both these courts come from our own people, yet in one court they convict the violator of a Federal law and acquit one who has broken a State law. Why is this? This is something worth thinking about, and the correct answer will be interesting. A few days ago a negro man carried his son to lntendant Blackwell and made a rather unique request. | After stating that the boy needed to | be dealt with, the man asked Mr - E!| i d | ee what we are jl tore. | . Blackwell for the loan of a cell in \ y the guard house for a few days in which h^ wanted to cool the boy off. The request was granted and the boy left alone wi^ a section of atmog ptiere, sued as~ it is, to ponaer over his wickedness. Of course, as all ? know, it is exceedingly pleasant in that place snch weather as we are are having now, and if the boy grew cold as to uieauness, he did not oth- ) erwise. The squad engaged in putting i down the big ninety pound rails on the Coast Line reached Lake City A Monday aud by Tuesday afternoon had passed the southern boundary i of the town. These new rails are j one aud one-half times the sizeof those displaced and by the side of those in use twenty-five years ago | are veritable monsters.
