STRUCK WITH COURT HOUSE SQUARE IM t PROVEMENT- TOBACCO AND TRUCK r -SOME SENSIBLE SUGGESTIONS. y Harpers, June 14:--Your scribe W visited the comity seat last Monday, j the 7th inst. and I must say that ' the improvement made around our court house yard is wonderful. The good ladies of Kingstree -deserve lasting credit tor the beautiful , . I lawn now growing green around our 4^ court house grounds. I have been informed that this good work was accomplished by the good ladies of that progressive town. The farmers of this community are complaining of ury weather and ^ we are now suffering one of the hottest spells ever experienced in June. But one consolation is, it r it takes that sun to make King Cotton. Mr D W Avant, of this place/j brought to the store or me writer one day last week a stalk pulled up from a large lield of cotton fully waist high, w hich" had several dozens shapes or forms on it. Several other farmers have tine cotton and i some fields of corn in and around town are as fine as has ever been grown in this community. The bean patches are now growing in corn, the bean vines having been ploughed under as humus for the land. The writer believes that Harpers and Iloseniary will in the next few years be one of the largest trucking sections of South Carolina. We have the finest truck lauds in the South, also tobacco crops flourish nicely in this community. If there be a market established in Kingstree v this year there will be hundreds of h acres of tobacco planted here in 1910. ? The writer intends to use all the iullnence he can exert to get the farmers to diversify their crops more and more every year. We have as good lands as the world contains and our people will ctme to the front. The lower part of Williams burg and Georgetown counties must and by right ought to develop into one of the tinest farming sections of the State. Our farmers each year are cultivating better, fertilizing higher aud diversifying their crops, also increasing the size of their farms eveiy year. This low country is bound to come into its own. The advance in the price of 1 lands shows the fruit of the development which is being made. Anyone seeking a home in this section can buy real estate cheaper now than it will ever be again. We only lack capital and a plenty of thrift and determination to make this county grow as it should. Subscriber. The First Cottoo Blooms. Messrs J P Hauna of Lambert and J J Tart, who lives a few miles ^ out of town, are entitled to the honor of the first cotton blooms we have seen or heard of this season. Both these gentlemen state that the blooms were plucked on June 1U, Mr Tart's from a 29 acre field, while Mr Hanna says his came from a two acre field. These cotton blossoms bear a message of the coming of harvest time and to the Southern farmer they are emblematic of peace, prosperity and plenty. A Thrilling Rescue.
