SENATOR SMITH SPEAKS OUT.
iav? Ho i? a nomnrrat and Will Stlr.l
to the Party's Principles.
Washington, May 7: ? Sena to j
Miiith showed some "emotion'" todai
vhen he saw The State, containing
lie extract from the Virginia papei
tating the new South Carolina Sen.tor
was going to vote for protection
>11 the products of his State, He was
,t that time turning off a lumber
obbyywhich wanted to convince him
te ought to \ote for a duty on lumer.
Some of the lumber lobbyists,
eeing the piece iu the paper, supposed
that Smith was open to a propsi
tion, or at least ready to be coninced.
This iu spite of the fact, the
euator says, that he had told them
iiat he was goiug to vote the straight
)emocratic ticket, one plank of
hose platform declared specifically
>r free lumber. The Virginia paper
iferred to Senator Smith of South
arolina.
"There are a good many Smiths
t the country," said the Senator.
Even the Senate here is loaded
ith them. This particular Smith is
Democrat and whenever he cannot
it in accordance with the Demoatic
party's principles he's goiug to
sign bis job and get out."
The lumber lobbyists have been
tiling on both the South Carolina
;nators. Senator Tillman told them
le same thing yesterday that Smith
Id them today?that he was going
> vote in accordance with the platrin
which called for free lumber.
The lumber lobby, by the way,
hich called on Senators Smith and
illrnan represented themselves as
om South Carolina. Six men
died at Senator Smith's oSice today,
lling him that some of them were
om South Carolina and some from
her States, who had interests in
)uth Carolina. As they came out I
et them.
"Do any of you gentleaieu live in
outh Carolina?" I asked.
"Well," answered one straightforard,
honest-looking fellojy, "I
ave interests there, but 1 cannot
:actly say 1 live there. I live in
ew York."
"Are any of the others from South
arolina?'' I asked.
"No, sir,'' was his reply.

DIVERSIFICATION NEEDED.
[ How the South Loses by Sticking to
One Crop.
r
J We notice in a Southern uews-;
r! paper an article concerning thet
' j wasteful methods in marketing the
. I cotton crop, Mr George W Truitt
L says, "Quit going in debt to laise
. cotton," and Mr Leonidas F S?x>tt
> i
insists that the reason a 600 million
! dollar cotton crop does not make the
South the richest country in the,
world is that Southern farmers buy
hay and corn at extortiouate prices,
bay them regardless of price. ;'
Continuing Mr Scott says that j

carelessly packing cotton b a. '* j
Ninety farmers out of every hut ,-ed j
he says, think they get paid for the .
wrappings from a bab of cotton. .
As a matter of fact, thirty pounds, t
6 per cent tare, is taken off of the '
price of every bale. If each bale of .
the 1909 crop wa& properly com- ,
pressed when ginned and wrapped
in cotton it would mean a saving of
30 millions.
We join Mr Scott and Mr Truitt
in urging, as we have done for the
past generation, the diversification
of Southern Agriculture. Every
farm is not equally adapted to every
crop. Let each farmer find out
what his soil is adapted to and raise
something besides cotton, liaise
corn and cattle, raise hogs, raise
oats and alfalfa aud Southern cow
peas. In this direction lies independence
for the Southern farmer.?
