The local graded school will J
close on Friday, May 21.
Dr J L Mann of Florence will
deliver an addiess on education
Friday night at the Baptist |
church. Everybody is invited
to come out and hear him.
There will be a big May day ?
picnic at Scranton next Satur- \
day, May 1, Everybody is ,
invited to attend and bring well ,
filled baskets. An address by
Mrs Mary Harris Armour of
Georgia and music by a brass >
band will be special attractions. {
Mr John W Worrell, a farmer t1
who lived near Scranton, died '
Thursday afternoon after a long 1
illness. He was sixty-two years 1
old and is survived by a widow
and several children. The remains
were taken to Mars'
Bluff, the former home of the deceased,
for interment.
The writer has received an '
. invitation to attend the commencement
exercises ot the
Medical College of South Carolina
at the Academy of Music, 1
at Charleston, on next Wednesday

apo, on the 17th, to be exact. |
Mr A E Cook's horse becoming
frightened by an automobile
last Thursday, ran away and
wrecked the buggy. It seems
that Mr Cook had left his horse j
standiug in front of the Sauls-;
baker Cos establishment whilej
he went into the store. Two
men from Florence came spin
ning along in an automobile and j
approached the horse, which became
panic stricken, and whirl-j
ing around, went north along j
Acline avenue at a terrific rate. {
At the residence ot \Y L Bass,
Esq, he left the street and dashing
up the sidewalk. The buggy
struck Mr Bass's yard fence,
smashing pickets and posts and i
wrecking the buggy. On the!
horse sped, until he reached Mr i
S W Gowdy's residence, where!
he overturned the buggy against
the fence and broke out. The
buggy was completely ruined,
but the horse was only slightly
injured.
The Methodist missionary conference
ol the Kingstree district
will meet at the Methodist
church heie next Friday. Ouite
a large attendance is expected.
On Friday night of last week
the Lake City Dramatic club
presented the play "Among the
Breakers," at the auditorium.
The audience was a large one,
the hall being full even as to
standing room: and the performance
was very good indeed,giving
splendid satisfaction. The
proceeds went to assist the Baptists
in building their parsonage.
Messrs Mood Williams and
Cleveland Rogers are at home
From the South Carolina Medical
College, Charleston, where they
are taking courses, the former
in medicine and the latter in
pharmacy.

Interests.
On the lirst day of July the County
Board of Education will appoint trustrees
of the several school districts to
serve for the next two years. I have
given this matter considerable thought i
and have decided to give the people of !
each district an opportunity to nomi-:
nate their trustees.
1 therefore designate Saturday, May
29. eleven o'clock a m. as the time for
all patrons and qualified electors in the
various school districts to meet at some
suitable place in each district for the
purpose of nominating trustees and
discussing such other matters of educational
interest as they see proper.
I hereby request the present trustees
of the several districts to name the
place of meeting in their district, and
to advertise said meetings by posting
in public places not fewer than three
notice- for the small districts and not
fewer than five for the large districts,
and that one of the trustees act as
chairman of the meeting. If no trustee
should be present a chairman may
be elected.
Nominations may be sent to me as
soon as practicable after the meeting.
