The Same Acre lay Be Entered for State aod County Contests. Commissioner Watson has issued an important announcement concerning the State corn contest, in which interest is growing every day. There have been inquiries at bis office as to the rules which have been printed in pamphlet form and will be mailed to any one wishing to enter. There has also been some con. fusion as to the right of a contestant to enter not only the State contest but the private contests instituted by county farmers' unions, banks and other organizations that see the value in planting large crops of corn. Mr Watson exg^ns thjtthe State corn contest is o ?n to every farmer in the State anc hat he can enter any of the other contests. The planter can also enter tbe one-acre contest on the five-acre plot selected for tbe five-acre contest, provided a separate record is kept of tbe oneacre results. Mr Watson's statement is as follows: "Throughout the State county contests in the growing of corn, some under the auspices of banks, some under tbe control of farmers' unions, etc., have been undertaken for the year 1909. The majority who are entering these contests do not know that they can at the same time enter the State contest and that it will cost nothing. They simply , have to write to me making their 1 pntry for either the one- or the live- ! acre contest and ask for the manual, which gives all rules and regulations, and in which the record of the crop must be kept. In making entries for both, the b?.on f ku ricrk^ fA 11 Qp I IHJiilcouau 10 11 aic %uu n^uv w one acre of the five for the one-acre contest, provided its record is kept J separate from its record in connec- i tion with the other four acres for ] the five-acre contest. This requires, ; of course, a oue-acre measurement in a five-acre field and necessitates the keeping of two manual records. There has been some confusion in regard to this feature, and hence ! this annonncement which, I trust, * is sufficiently clear. i "I hope all those who are iu j county contests will enter the State contest. The entries are coming in J rapidly, and today there are more j entries on the books by five times than we have ever had before. This ; is gratifying and reveals a lively interest this year iu corn growing, presaging a large 1909 corn crop."
