On Friday, April 2. the preliminary
contest to decide who
shall be o?? the declamation at
commencement was held in the
school auditorium. A number ot
visitors,friends and mothers, who
were interested in the contestants,
were present and in spite
of the fact that the contest was
pretty long1, inasmuch as each
member of the eighth, ninth and
tenth grades had to "speak a
piece," most of them remained
until it was all over and the decision
of the judges had been
given in. The judges were:
Messrs LeRoy Lee, R K Wallace
and Prof Colbert. The successful
contestants were: From
tpnth ?rade. Roberta Coker,
Clara Montgomery, Ada Brockington,
from the ninth grade,
Minnie Bryan, Elma Hinds, Vivian
Wheeler; from the eighth
grade, Marion McFadden, Bessie
Swann, Mary Vause. Prof Colbert
and the other judges said
they thought the pieces were
spoken splendidly and of course,
as this was only the trial contest,
we expect to give the public
a much better entertainment
commencement.
On Friday afternoon, April 9,
the school boys are going to
play another ball game with
Lake City. Everybody must
come. It will start promptly at
4 o'clock.
Bev E E Ervin conducted
chapel exercises on Tuesday
morning. We are always glad to
see our preachers.
We were glad to have Miss
Selma Thorn and Miss Marie
Gregg of Florence visit us last
Monday.

Teachers.
The authorities of Wofford College
will begin this summer a regular
summer session for teachers.
For the present summer the school
will last only four weeks, beginning
Wednesday, June 23, and ending
Tuesday, July 20.
Twenty-five courses will be offered
in the following branches: Drawing,
English, French, German, Geography
and Physiography, History
and Civics, Latin, Geometry, Algebra,
Arithmetic, Music, Physics,
Pedagogy, Physiology and Primary
Methods.
The faculty will be made up from
Wofford College, Converse College,
the Spartanburg city schools, and
other institutions in the State.
Issue Circular.
A circular will be issued before
April giving an outline of the courses,
the names of the faculty, and
other necessary information.

icy and purpose may be gained some
idea of the school and the lines
along which it will be developed:
1. To offer in the State an opportunity
to teachers to prepare themselves
for increasingly efficient work
in common schools.
2. To aid in equipping teachers
for high school work.
3. To enable the inexperienced
graduates of colleges, who intend to
teach, to profit by the instruction
and experience of practical teachers
in the high school branches.
4. To keep up the work already
so well begun by the former State
summer schools of bringing the
teachers of the State together for
exchange of opinion and experience,
for the stimulus and enlargement of
personal and intellectual association,
and for the development of a
professional spirit and unity.
5. To develop courses looking to
the degree of L I, and to offer courses
toward the degree of A B. This
will be done by lengthening the term,
i by gradually adding other branches
and advanced courses in the funda
meutal culture and professional
studies, by outlining work to be
done in the interval between summer
schools.
6. To enable our teachers to
unite with the foregoing opportunities
and advantages, the benefits of
rest, recreation, and social inter1
course in the fine summer climate of
the near-mountain country.
