Willie Whitla, who was kidnapped
from school at SharoD, I'a, last
week causing the police all over the
couutry trouble and excitement, was
found at Cleveland, O, Monday
night. The kidnappers demanded
$10,000 ransom for the boy and it is J
said that his father paid it
Senator E D Smith has been assigned
to the Senatorial committees

Ellerbe do not seem to be able to
agree on a candidate for the Florence
postoffice and indications are that
Cassel, a Republican, may land the

During a thunder storm at Beaufort
Monday, lightning struck the
Habersham College building, a negro
institution, tore several boards
off one side and entered the building
over the telephone wire a short distance
from a lightning rod. Thence
the bolt passed into the sleeping!
room of the principal, who was J
asleep and entirely demolished the
furniture, tearing the brass trimmings
from the bed, all without injury
to the sleeping man.
Ike Feaster, a negro, was shot and
probably fatally wounded one night
recently by a policeman in Chester.
The negro had robbed a store and
was going away laden with goods.
A man and a woman were arrested
Tuesday at Cleveland, 0, supposed to
be the abductors of Willie Wbitla,
the boy who was kidnapped from a
school at Sharon, Pa, for whose ransom
the father is said to have paid
the kidnappers 310,000. The woman
had concealed on her person $9,790.
Of the $3,000 pay given the men
who offered for service in the United
States volunteer ranks in 1898, the
''Heavy Battery Artillery" receives
$1,490.32. Gov Ansel a few days ago
received the checks for the corps
and the others that were unable to
be mustered in for service. The pay
of some of the men reaches as much
