Rev W 0 Wilson of Harpers is making an effort to organize a W 0 W Camp at this place. It is hoped that he will succeed | and that we shall have a local camp in the near future. m The school here closed last V Friday. The past session here I has been a very successful and I satisfactory one under the manI agement of Mr C C Lowe, the I popular and efficient principal. The State board of education has been called to meet today iu Columbia. At that time several matters of importance will be brought up. most of them of interest to the entire State. One of these is the taw for lengthening the school term as passed flio loaf lionnwl' Au^mhlr Tf: u? vuy 1HOV 4AWWVU?VI r provides that any school which now runs less thau 100 davs can receive aid from the State if the trustees or patrous will raise one-third of the money to pay the teachers' salary. The treasure is an experiment, which seeks to ascertain how many rural districts are willing to pay a small amount for school improvement. The $20,000 appropriated must be used during March, April, May and June, because the school apportionment for 1909 will be made early in July, and after this apportionment no distiict can claim that its own school fuud has beea exhausted. The high school law has been amended in two important particu lars. Any incorporated town wuu leas than 400 population can now establish a high school if it can qualify in the same manner as is now required of a rural high schol. But no State aid will hereafter be given unless the high pchool district is levying at least a 2 mill tax for either common or high school purposes. The additional $10,000 given tohigh schools will enable the board to reach at least 20 communities now preparing to apply for State high school aid. While the colleges and universities are forced to do high school work, the educational standards must continue to be low. The board will be aslflkl to renew its appropriation of $2,000 for prizes awarded by the Rural School Improvement association. Last year 91 schools competed for these prizes and it is safe 10 say that no educational investment in this State ever secured better returns. The board will have two new members, one to succeed Senator Montgomery and another in Superintendent Swearings, who succeeds Superintendent Martin as ex-officio secretary of the board. Other important matters must be transacted, for county boards of education are to be appointed high school appropriations made and teachers' examinations arranged. How can any person risk taking some unknown cough remedy when Foley's Honey and Tar costs them no more? It is a safe remedy, contains no harmful drugs, and cures the most obstinate coughs and colds. Harpers, Marcn 2:?The Harpers WCTU enjoyed two lectures by Mrs Emma G Dietrick, the national organizer, Sunday, February 28. This is the third time that Mrs Dietrick has visited our town, having organized a union here and one at Elim M E Church a year ago. Her lectures are always enjoyed, but we felt a deeper appreciation this time than ever before, as our town had been so recently agitated by the dispensary subject. We hope the ruinous effects of the whisky business were made clear to some who seemed to think the revenue would be such an up-butlaing to our town ana community. In the morning Mrs Dietrick used the words from Paul?Phil iv:8, to ' ihow that the druukard, the man who deals the wh' '-ey out to the drinker and the ci' * who m. ke possible the carryir^ of sijgjk trafficj are opposed to tri hon y, justice, purity and love.' In tb evening her talk was made mor^i'mpressive by her using the Ten Commandments? God's own words ? showing that whisky causes Sabbath breaking, dishonoring of parents, profauity and breaks every commandment in God's law. We trust these meetings will be of 1 asting good to our little town. Harpers W C T U.
