Harpers, January 25: ? Our
Truck association met at Harp- j
ers last Saturday and arranged j
for securing bean seed, also po- j
tatoes, cantaloupe and cucum-l
ber seed. Our merchants have
agreed to order the seed at
i - l 1 I !
once, we aiso nau several dt'CB
added to the number pledged
I to be planted. Our farmers are
determined to plant both truck
and tobacco and less cotton. If
your scribe can succeed in getting
the farmers to make this
change. 1 know success will
crown our efforts and your hum
ble scribe will feel amply repaid
for his efforts made. With
;our help, Mr Editor, our farmks
will look back to 1909 with I
oleasure and profit.
Our town people were aroused j
on last Monday night by the i
alarm of tire. One of the dwell-'
ing houses of Mr W S Camlin.
Jr, was found to be in a blaze, j
The people responded promptly j
but the fire was too far advanced
to save the building. There were '
live buildings only a short dis-!
tance apart, but by the heroic efforts
of our good people Mr
Camlin lost only one house, j
partly covered by insurance.
HnaH hnriv nf a neero bov. i
Peter Grayson, was brought to
Harpers last Sunday morning on
the G & W railroad This boy
was accidentally killed by a j
"skidder" belonging to the Mar?,
ion Lumber Co. He was raised in
y- " our town and came from a good
family of negroes.
Saturday the hum of the Harwell
Jin Co coulcl be heard in
X ?
town. Our farmers are not en j
Jk tirely through ginning their last
year's cotton yet. There have
also been 5 or 6 cars of cotton
seed and 40 or 50 bales of cot- j
^ton shipped from Harpers the
past week.
The cleaning and cultivating
ol tarms around town is progressing
nicely. We shall have
in one farm at Harpers this year
500 acres This farm,I have been
informed,will be planted in small
grain and some fruit as well.
The owner, Mr W H Andrews,
told the writer that he would
join our association and plant
as much track as anyone in the
association. Mr Andrews' farm
will be one of the largest in this i
community. A good part of it is
in town. There are several other
farms of 50 and 100 acres each
"being opened up around here.
Several parties who bought land
last fall from Mr Edwin Harptr
are now putting up buildings on i
t lose lands and getting the soil j
in shape for cultivation. Wei
hope to see our modest little J
town within 12 months grow so
v as to attract the attention of
home seekers. We have the resources
arid invite and welcome 1
good people to come and cast
their lot with us.
^*^he Harpers Mercantile Co
has made application for a charter
and hopes to begin business
* by February 15. The promoters
seem determined to begin this
enterprise at once and we predict
success for those who have
taken stock in the company.
