Commenting on Senator Till*
mat's speech of defense in the
' United States Senate the Sumter
Herald observes:
Senator Tillman for all his rough
ways is a scholar, and he never quoted
to better purpose than when he
said of .President Roosevelt, quoted
from the Faerie Queen:
' Here's sigh to those who love me,
And a smile to those who hate me,
Here's a heart for every fate."
Our usually well informed contemporary
seems to have mixed
his poets as well as his Tillmans.
The nearest approach we can recall
to the three lines quoted is Bvrcn's
"Farewell to Tom Moore,"
from which Col James II Tillman
quoted in his recent letter to the

players have been invited to assume
the principal characters of
a new military comedy drama
Vailed "Daughter of the Confederacy".

i play is founded on incidents of
! the War between the States and
j not only interprets the war
from a Southern standpoint, but
rather by undisputed fact and
actual historical occurrences.
From Vurtain up to curtain
down the story ot the drama is
intensely interesting with strong
emotional scenes and beautiful
stage situations written with ev!
ery requirement of refinement
and portraying the heart throbs
i of the. Confederacy in all its
many phases.
Throughout the play the plantation
negro comedy has been
interpolated, giving to the characters
of Old Black Joe and Aunt
Dinah the funny characteristics
of the old-fashioned darkey during
the period 1861-65.There are
no people in the world who have
been so universally made the
theme of story and song as the
I people of Dixie land. The steady
march of commercialism is fast
driving romance away but the
Southland will be slow to yield
to the invader, for it is the soul
of chivalry/the home of fair women
and brave men, the place
where the sun shines brightest,
the moonlight the clearest,where
the women speak softest, the
men love strongest and tight
quickest. It is this spirit that is
woven into the drama, "Daugh-'
ter of the Confederacy,'' creating
an atmosphere of its own
that clings until the fall of the
last curtain.

will personally direct the.
Kingstree production for the
Daughters of the Confederacy.
Rehearsals are now in progress'
at the opera house and the* cast
promises to be letter perfect
and present a professional performance.

render popular melodies of the
South and be heard throughout! i

view Southern States and great i'
Confederate generals in a fancy Is
drill and song numbers* Thep
military chorus has been writ-J'
ten as a tribute to I'resident*
Jefferson Davis and General
Lee and in a convincing manner,
impress upon Southern children
the grand vitures of the lead- ?
ers of the Confederacy and a '
just cause. Thus will the memory
of the Grays be carried into |
future generations and their
brave deeds forever immortalized.
The names of the cast,
quartette and children taking;
part in the military chorus will j
be announced later.
