n On Tuesday morniug Solicitor
V Wells, accompanied by Sheriff T S
W Bunyh, Deputy Sheriff E 0 Ilarrell
and Chief of l'oiice J? J Koopnian
went down to Hymanville to attend
the inquest. The proceedings took
tip almost the entire day, and it was
' at a late hour last night that they ;
returned with their prisoners. Perfect
order was preserved by the officers
during the inquest,and there was:
no attempt at any disorder. After
the crowd had assembled at the;
place of inquest orders weie issued
that no one be allowed to leave the
premises, and this order was obeyed
to the letter.
Sheriff Burch forwarded his offic- !

prompt action, in all probability,1

^What caused probably more ex- '
eitement in the neighborhood were
'night rider" posters tacked up on (
trees and buildings all through the j
neighborhood. These posters were
tacked up on Monday night. One J
of the members of the coroner's jury'
found one of them tacked on the
. front door of his house on Tuesday j
and another found several stuffed in |
bis mail box. The posters are writ- j
ten on plaiu note paper, and urei
decorated at the top with what pur-;
ports to be a rising sun, with the
word "Notice'' in the centre of the
sun. While, of course, they were
-only iutended as a bluff, which a'
~*Vthorough invea.igation disclosed.'
they caused qui^ a great deal of
alarm in the community. Several
of them were brought to Hie city j
?md were shown on the streets todav.

A copy of one follows:
"Notice.
"We night riders, the one Arthur1
Davis, colored, was killed on last1
Thursday night by a band of 52:
men, which has sworn to protect
their country, and we here further |
say that if there is any white brought
up in that thing, we will make each
and every juror, magistrate and witness
suffer the same Arthur Davis
did, for rape ou a white lady."
In addition to the officers, your
correspondent today interviewed a
gentleman from Hyinauville who is
well acquainted with all the facts of
the case, and he corroborated in
-every detail facts as set out above.
He further stated that there was absolutely
no srround for the statement
that the negro had been lynched tor
rape.
