Nineteen naught nine.
A happy new year to all.
Mr A C Swails went to Florence
Tuesday on business.
Christmas and the carnival
are over, now let's get down to
* business.
Mr W J Singletary has just
completed a neat tenant house
on his lot in East Kingstree,
The \*oung folks of the dancing
set enjoyed a pleasant dance
at the Kellahan hotel new
year's night.
I
Mr S F Epps has opened a
meat market in the building
next to Stackley's corner on
Main street.
Prof J G Colbert has movad
into*the cottage on Academy
street recently occupied by Rev
Mr Ervin.
Mr E V Anderson, who is with
the Blakely-McCullough Co near
Talt, was a visitor at me county
seat Monday,
Dr W L Taylor has titted up
his dental office over Dr W V
Brockington's drug store. See
his card in another column.
The Presbyterians have finished
their manse and their pastor,
Rev E E Ervin, and his family
nave moved into their new
nome.
Mr W M Tobias, formerly of
Lake City but now with the Pee
Dee' Printing* Co of Florence,
visited friends in town this
week.
Mr 0 H Patrick,who has been
conducting a "five and ten cent
store," has closed his establishment
and will engage in other
business.
Bishop Gu'erry has appointed
next Sunday as the day to take
collections in the Episcopal
churches in South Carolina for
the earthquake sufferers in Italy,
^lon \Y D Bryan and Mrs Bryan
took in the carnival last
week. Mr Bryan says that one
day^luring the holidays a party
composed of Senator Smith,
Taft and Brvan went hunting on
his place.
The annual meeting" of the
Bank of Kingstree's stockholders
took place yesterday.
The usual dividend ot s per cent,
was declared and a very substantial
addition made to- the
already handsome surplus of
this nourishing institution.
We hereby give notice that
after January 1, 1909, all accounts
of a dollar or more for
subscription will be placed in
the hands of a collecting agency.
We hate to do this but
can't afford to lose the hundreds
of dollars our honest toil entitles
us to. tf

The commissioners appointed j
to look after the proposed for- (
mation of Rutledge county met j
in Lake City Monday, all being j
present except J W Ragsdale, 1
Esq. Messrs T 0 Hamby of Col-1
umbia and -E S Oliver of Marion
were elected to survey the area
of the territory to be included
in the new county.
Writes a satisfied customer:
"Enclosed is one dollar to renew
my subscription to The COUNTY
Record, the best county paper
in the United States." While
we fear our friend is prejudiced
in our favor or indulging in a
figure of speech called hyperbole,
we nevertheless value highly
this expression of appreciation
for our effort to produce a meritorious
local newspaper.
The bridge across the canal1
has been completed and the J
work accepted by the town j
council. Two Kitson lights have]
been erected, one on either side :
of the [street, to light up the
bridge on moonless nights. The
reinforced concrete bridge is a

town as well as a good advertisement
for the contractors?
Messrs Beatty & Beatty of
Georgetown.
On new year's day Drs Gam-;
ble and Jacobs were called to
Cedar Swamp to amputate the
arm of a negro boy, Billl Singletary,
who had got his arm
crushed in a cotton press the ,
day before. The boy was about |
14 years old and was hurt while
working at Tisdale Bros' gin-1
nery. The arm was taken off i
above the elbow and while the;
operation is a serious one the
patient at last accounts was
' rpstin,r easv and unless compli
cations arise will soon be con-j
valescent.
The Smith Greater Shows is a
jhigli class aggregation of its
; kind. The managers and, in
j fact, everybody connected with
; the shows, seem to be square
: and honest in all their dealings
! and we have not heard a single!
complaint of swindling or inde-'
cency in connection with the
carnival. A clean, wholesome:
show and a clever set of gentle-!
men seems to be the general estimate
of the carnival and its
entire personnel. The carnival
exhibited under the auspices of
the Kingstree Fire Company,
whose percentage of the net
profits amounted to $159.34?
quite a substantial help to the
fire laddies.
