jfc j THE HOLIDAY SEASON AT SCRANTON. i \ A DESTRUCTIVE FIRE-HYMENEAL?SO HAL AND PERSONAL ITEMS-SOME NEW YEAR REFLECTIONS. (Received too late for last week.) Scranton, December 2^:?Once more we are reminded of Tennyson's admonition "tread softly and speak low, lor the Old Year lies a-dyinff." W D McGee has been appointed town marshal, vice C F Kamrow retired. The Christmas holidays passed off pleasantly in Scranton. Good order prevailed and everybody seemed to have a good time. Mr W iM Smith,of the Florence Daily Times, was in town Tuesday on business. The town election will take place on January 12. No ticket has been nominated so far, and it is presumed that the present councilmen will be re-elected. Mr T C Willoughbv of Florence transacted business in Scranton Tuesday. Mr ]j O Jlrockinton, a wellknown merchant of Mott's llrid.frp.was in town one dav this week. Mr C F Kamrow has gfone to X'onway to spend a few days. Miss Gladys Andrews.a charming" young1 lady from Bethel, N C, is visiting- her sister. Mrs Myers Graham. Mr Fred Ilines visited King'stree Tuesday. Messrs Myers Graham and S L McKnight, who are attending the medical college in Charleston, are at home on their holiday Tacation. Kev W D Moorer and family left Monday for Goldsboro. N C, where they will visit relatives before proceeding to their home in VKiaiiuuia, l>r 0 II Pate and family returned Tuesday night from l>ishopville, where they spent the holidays with the doctor's parents. Mr and Mrs Fred Iline* gave the younger set a party Tuesday night which was a delightful affair in every way. Merry-making was unrestrained and happiness ruled the hour. Mr J M Parker has gone to iNevv York on a pleasure trip. Mr H L Lee of Charleston w/ts in town the first of the week on business. \ Miss liessie Feldhaus.the popular milliner' at Wright's the past season, returned to her home in Baltimore Christmas eve. During her sojourn in SP Scranton, Miss Keldhaus, by hei pleasing- and winsome manner won man)* Iriends who were sin cerely sorry to part with her. Mr Hoover of North Carolin: and Miss Mary McCutchen wer< happily married by the Rev W f Gause on the -1th inst. Mr William Joyner and Mis! Effie Baker, of the Liberty church community, were marrie< married at the Baptist parson age at this place on 23rd inst Rev J W Truluck officiating. The familes of Mr R E Mc Knight and Mr Fred Hines ha< a Christmas-tree at the home o the former on the evening of th< 24th. The tree, which was < beautiful holly of symmetrica form, was laden with a profusior of presents from old Santa's plethoric pack. After the dis. tribution of the presents the re mainder of the evening was | spent in such pleasant diversion j as best suited the fancy of the younger foil?. Long will the oc* 'casion linger in their memory. The general merchandise store of Mr P M Lee was destroyed by tire last Wednesday night about 2 o'clock. A small brick ! building, used by the late Dr ; Byrd as a drug store, was also I burned. The origin of the tire is a mystery that will, perhaps, never be satisfactorily solved. The stock of goods, valued at $7,000, was partially covered I by insurance. We have not learned whether \here was any insurance on the store room, j which belonged to the Hardin I estate. The Byrd property was i i l i not insured ana was a roiai iuss. And now, dear Old Year, we I have come to the "parting of the ways." In a large, distant city, amid the screaming, shrieking, solemn sound of a multitude of steam whistles, the deep, sonorous tones of numerous bells, the boom and roar of many great guns and a spectacular pyrotechnic illumination,we witnessed your advent. You came I to us with alluring promises, ini viting opportunities and a bright ! future. With renewed hope and a cheerful heart we began our I onward journey together and for 363 days we have kept compa' ny. Our pathway has not been 'over a smooth road all the way, nor havp flri\c#?rs in nrofusion garnished the patli we have trod. We have had some pleasant and some unpleasant experiences, but, withal, you have been good to us, dear Old Year, and we love you. It pains us tc part with you,but we shall meel again when "we shall have : crossed the bar." Till then we bid you a last, long, lingering j loving farewell! W E C.
