well chosen and appropriu '
remarks.
Senator Smith spoke along
the lines of education in general
and stressed the importance
ot science and intelligence being
applied to farming methods.
The low price of cotton is due
mainly, be said, to over production
and if the farmers would
curtail their cotton crops and
make etffet million instead of
twelve nuiMoa bales they would
get just as much for the smaller
crop and be saved the expense
and labor of cultivating and
gathering the excessively large
crop. Reduce cotton acreage,
raise provisions and live hard
for a year and the farmer would
be in a position to demand a ,
good price for his cotton and
hold the whip-hand over the
speculators who "bear" the market
and hammer down the price.
Senator Smith spoke with his *
usual force and eloquence and
held the close and earnest attention
of those who gathered to

but there were noted among
the audience farmers from nearly

Four Negroes In Jail Charged With the
Murder ol Mel la Williams.
Sheriff Graham went to Cedar
Swamp Tuesday and arrested
three negroes, Julia Singletary,
James Singletary and Joe, alias

charging them with murder
sworn out by Dave McCrea, a
brother of Melia Williams, the
woman whose body was found
in the woods near Morrisville
some days ago. Ben Singletary
and DozierSingletary are also included
in the warrant. Ben came
in Wednesday and gave himself
up to the sheriff and Dozier

of the dead woman was held on
Saturday by Magistrate Nesmist
and the verdict, we are
informed, was that the deceased

came to her death at the hands
of parties unknown to the jury. 1

The feature act introduced
here by the Crescent Comedy
Company, we must admit,
is surely a treat to the
Georgetown people. In the
fist specialty Prof. Bergeron
introduced Miss Allen
and gave a series of cabinet
experiments that prove
almost supernatural, and
will remain a mystery as
the astute citizens of
Georgetown were unable to
discover the way in which
she freed herself after she
had been sealed in every
possible way. The committee
on the stage was
composed of Messrs J T
Adams and Rouck.
These gentlemen ackowledged
that there was no
deception, and that her
work was positively marvelous,
The immense audience
was astounded by
her version and prediction
in Thaumaturgy. Blindfolded
and seated on a
Chair in the center of the
