Be slow to make a promise, but having made one fulfill it, whatever may be the C03t. The Republican campaigu contributions have at last been made public, amounting to $1,655,518.27. The most practical form of thanksgiving is to do something for, or give something to some One who needs it. The greater the sacrifice the gift or service entails, the greater the glow of satisfaction the giver will feel. ^Tis not in mortals to comf mand success; but we'll do more ' Semphronius, we'll deserve 1 it,'' which sentiment of Mr Ad- ' i dison seems very much a propos ' in contemplating the overwhelming defeat of Mr Bryan. The gifted Commoner did not win at the ballot box, but the principles h? advocates will lead to ultimate victory, whoever may be the * standard-bearer. As Mr Bryan himself says, "it is merely a battle lost-, not a war.'' , Mr Robert Lathau, who resigned as stenographer in the child judicial circuit to take a ipoetion with the Charleston News & Courier several years ago, has recently been promoted to the responsible post of city editor on a that newspaper. During his iu- s cumbency as stenographer on this v ^circuit, Mr Lathan gained many friends and performed his duties \tt the court room with the same I ' ] conscientious zeal and energy that characterize his newspaper work. 1 Merit will tell and we*are glad j that the discerning management < of the News & Courier has rec- 1 ognized and rewarded the conspicnous ability of Mr Lathan. t ? We understand that on account ^ of his feeble condition brought ] on by long-continued illness, Gen R R Hemphill, the editor of the Abbeville Medium and the veter- t I an clerk of the Senate, will not a s o#er for re-election. Gen Hemphell has made an excellent official and we do not know anvone we , J s would prefer for the place; but if our friend is not going to run again our next choice is Ed H DcC.unp, editor of the Gaffuey Ledger. DeCamp is affable aud ( courteous, pains-taking and com- j petent and "business" to his finger tips?an ideal man for this responsible post. We hear that he is goiDg to try for the place and here's hoping that he may win. But tnat we fear she is surfeited with sweets on account of the numerous bouquets already received, we would say that Miss Estella Smoak, the editor of the ? Branchville Journal, gets out one of the brightest and cleanest "weeklies" that come to our office. We doff our chapeau to this fair member of the "Fourth Estate" and congratulate her most i heartily cm the excellent newspa-j per she is giving her readers. ; Few people realize the hardships : and never ceasing grind, the physical and mental labor it takes to edit a weekly newspiper, and for a:; inexperienced young lady to take tiie helm and steer her ; frail bark through the troubled i waters of journalism with tiltskill and sure hand of a veteran is worthy the admiration of all her fellow-sufferers in the cause. J Our editorial reference last week flia .1 rO aarvimtimr fVlP oniirl nf IV kUL UVl OV^UIMVUSjj, v.a v vv??% - j sessions and the court of common pleas was based on o ir comprehension of the subject in a gen- : eral way. Since writing this ar-) tide we have had a conversation! with Senator Bass (ivlio assumes responsibility for it) with regard to the new law and we are con^' viuced that our information when the editorial was written did not cover certain points which place the matter in a different light. / In referring to the matter in the first instance it was far from our intention to reflect on anyone, but merely to call attention to what we deemed an act of useless and unnecessary legislation, costing the sounty several hundred dollars. Senator Bass reminds U3 (and we ire glad to be set straight) that unier the old law the court of mmmon pleas could not be op med until Wednesday and it arould have been impracticable for ;he same set of jurors to ?e n both courts without ;ime" from Monday until lesday of the first court v* ;herefore the county is out nc ng so far as the paying of j ors is concerned. We believt. lowever, that the act might be imended so that | both ^courts :ould be held the same week, the me immediately following the >ther without loss of time, by < fhich arrangement the county, in ^ i majority ofj cases, would , ^bo , aved a .substautial amount'in the vay of expense. ? i ] State of Ohio, 1 ] }ity of Toledo, > as. Mr. Alton is one of the tew wbite ] Republicans in his section of Arkan-: sas. He has in his employ an aged j negro known as "Uncle Reuben," who "feudurin' de wall had fit for de Union." A few months ago Uncle Reuben applied for a pension. As Mr. Alton was riding past a field where the old man was plowing one .day hist week, he was hailed in this wise: "Marse John, I done got my papahs, an' I wanter 'knowledge dem 'fore you." "You cau't acknowledge them before me, Reuben," was the response, "you must go to Squire McC'abe or some other magistrate." "'Taiu't so," was Uncle Reuben's indignant rejoinder. On one of these occasions, having formed quice a good congregation and having been moved to much eloquence in his sermon, he felt a little not unnatural desire to know if he bad made any impression on the usually unimpressionable vokcls and put some leading questions to the ~~ aid clerk, who was helping him to unrobe in the-vestry. Why He Attracted. ^ hn A broker who had the reputation of using strong language on the golf links started out on a sunny au- pr tumn afternoon to play nine holes, pa Looking back after he had drivenoff, he saw a great crowd following. ^ There were young men and old, good players anch l?ud, all trailing ? close behind with looks of interest , and expectation. I trust ve I shall play weH enough to reward Li all this kindly interest." "Oh, it isn't that," replied an eld- _ erly lawyer, with a chuckle.
