r * i ' I :*THE NEEDS FOR RURAL IMPROVE t ! J MEKT ASSOCIATIONS. v K?-.vl Ufoiv the William-bur^ County Ttaclif rV ' < <xiution. SaturJav, No\vnib-r 7, 1>K I ] Prof J B Carl vie savs that the " y I J hope of the State is not in the cities and big towns, but that the hope of the greatest future is dawning in j the rural districts. Of course, there} j can be no doubt as to the truth of this statement, far by far the great- J er number of the children of ourl? 1 f State are being educated in the country. Furthermore, statistics | ^ show that where the people of rural i districts have been aroused to a real-1 izatiou of the importance of univer- j sal progress along educational lines; j v where they have been brought tojs see the necessity for placing in their J schools better facilities for health, ^ on/1 flHndotinn trvcrollipr VU1IUU1 l> UUV4 VUUVUllVllj VV^W?4V? ^ with objects of beauty, the results ^ have been almost marvelous. ( Now, the question is, through what agency has this state of affairs j been brought about in these districts? j Certainly, there can be no doubt ( th at much of it has been accomplish* { ed through "The Rural Improve- j ment Associations." And, now, the subject which I wish to bring iK-'fore you is the needs for such an organization in all rural districts. As is implied above, perhaps our j * greatest ueed is a deeply rooted public seutiment for better school houses, better equipment for them and n 'more beautiful grounds. In fact, a mauy of our rural districts need to d learn that the really beautiful is the b really useful. ^ o Iu the successful organization, j where at least all of the parents are w members, one of the greatest, or perhaps the greatest, difficulty of the n rural teacher is overcome; for no sooner tbau the parents realize that u are united for the common bet- tl tennent and upbuildiug of the educational cause, is it that the teacher ^ can feel sure of their interest and ^ co-operation in the great work that n she has undertaken for them. Even b if this were the only result that (1 could be bad from such an organiza- * tiou, the rural teacher would feel j, amply rewarded;but this,so to speak, [ is only the "Open Sesame" to what c misrht follow. J1 I u Of course, the teacher niuat take i the lead in this work and must uec-lc essarily feel the enthusiasm which j ? should be expressed, else there would |kbe little ho{>e to inspire such a feel-! ( ing in others. Let us look for a moment at tiie condition of affairs in the average rural school. The school house is 1J usually uncomfortably small, not M fnmieU with straight back 1 ' wircuj iuiuiuwv. 0 uncomfortable beuches and even these are often so high that the lit- 1 tie folks have to sit for hours with-! out ever having their feet touch the | floor. In fact, everything connected with such a school is not only i uncomfortable but absolutely unat- 1 tractive. Now, how can there be 1 any hope for better things educa- [ tionally as long as such conditions 11 exist? It may at first seem quite an undertaking to attempt to put a com-:' fortable and attractive school building in place of the old one, but, with the co-operation of all concerned, it is wonderfully easy to give various kinds of entertainments by which ,; sufficient funds can be raised. There' ] need be no fear that these entertain- J nients will not prove a success, for ^ ( theie are few things that appeal to , a really interested body of patrons [ V - : SP HHnOHHMHBHHIl nore strongly than the improvement )f their school. After the school house has been )btained there are a great many things that are, in one sense, of niuor importance, yet, in reality, ilmost necessary. Among these nay le named comfortable desks, ;ood black-boards and a school ibrary. In procuring a school li)rarv the teacher aud pupils are es>eoially encouraged; for if they can aise ten dollars, the county and >tate will come to their assistance ind each appropriate a like amount, nakiug a total of thirty dollars with rhich a good selection of books i)ay be obtained. Perhaps it is useless to name the arious minor improvements needed, ;uch as placing pictures on the walls, ixing up a reading room, fencing ;heyard, "etc; but it can easily be leen how much these improvements vould add to the comfort andattrac:ion of rural schools. 'l It is evidently true tlia for ''Rural Improvement ;ions" are many and great, anil :he time be not far distant wi; here will be such an organizatu every rural district in our StaL Ethel Nesmith.
