SCHOOL DAYS Wl
HOW OLD WAS ANN?
lomes Back in a New Form?,
Now Get Busy.
Here is an odd little piece of:
doggerel which appeared 111 the1
London Gentleman's Magazine many
years ago and which gave rise to
much discussion. Correspondents
seem to have been pretty evenly di-J
vided between those who claimed
that there were several answers and
such as maintained that the problem
was unsolvable:
When first the marriage knot was tie-1
Betwixt my wife and me
My age did hers as far exceed
As three times three does three,
/>ut when ten years and half ten years
Wi> man and wife had heen
iler age came up as near to mine
As twice four to sixteen. !
Tell me, Captain David Gray,
()ur ages on the wedding day.
It is the opinion of The Press
that the doggerel is erroneous: for, '
if he was six years her senior at the '
dime of their marriage the inter- 1
wening 15 years could not possibly J
xsause one of them to grow old faster ;
than the other. Each was 15 years '
older, and he still held his six years '
seniority. "Am I right or am I 1
wrong?*' Next!?Darlington Press.
We agree with The Press that as (
it reads in the ryhme the problem 1
is uDSolvable. But here is what the 1
author probably meant: When first
'married, A'sage exceeded tnat of '
his wife, as 9 is to 3; after fifteen (
years her age came up to his as 8 to 1
16. Or, to simplify the matter: '
When first married,the husband's age '
1 three times that of the wife; fifteen 1
; yeavedater, husband twice wife's age. 1
iHew old was each on wedding day?
The solution of the problem as thus
stated is quite 6'imple, making the i
wife 15 and the husband 45 on their
wedding day and 30 and 60, respectively,
fifteen years later. Next!

tried many advertised remedies, but
the caugh continued until I bought
a 50c. bottle of Dr King's New Discovery;
before that was half gone,
