The floods have come and gone,
bnt our bridge at -Johnson's ferry
was saved by the foresight of Supervisor
Singletary by ripping up
the flooring and putting it ou top of
the haud railing and by nailing "bat
tons'' from bridge post to caps, etc,
and by ropes tied to trees before the
water got over the bridge. No damage
around Johnsonville 6ection, but
Mr J G Eaddy, just over in Florence
county, leporte nine-tenths of his
fine crop ruined.
The back water in Muddy creek
was over the road dam at Ard's X

It is true that Pee Dee in every
freshet reverses the current at the
month of Lynch's river and it runs
backward to Goat island at Clark's
creek and thence down Clark's creek
to Pee Dee again, and sometimes the
current is reversed np to Dobbv

Speaking of the floods, the know- ]
ing ones say they are caused by the /
destruction of the forests ana tne '
remedy is reforestation. But they [
are caused by ditching and canaling, ;
which turn all the heavy rains at j
once into the rivers. Talk about a 1
remedy for floods! Just as well talk 1
about a remedy for dying! They have [
come to stay and floods will occur as ,
often as concerted conditions pre- :
rail. They are the result of drain- l
age, agriculture and civilization.
We must not stop drainage and I
pull my hat to the man who advo- ,
cates government aid in draining our i
lower counties. They are too low
down to cause floods. If the govern- '
ment cut canals, eveiy poor man can ,
drain his land into them and hurt (
nobody, but help all, as well as us in 1

OCEAN AN ENORMOUS POOL
Winds and Currents Keep It Moving
Round and Round.
The discoveries of modern science
have revealed monsters of the
ieep as terrific as any that ancient
fancy created and have shown that
>ceans are not mere waste9 of water,
but the homes of an astounding
rariety of living things. Mose than
this, it has been discovered that the
;eas themselves have each a sort of
aw of existence which they obey.
? \ /P.. .t nr.A
lhe hvarograpnic omce at nasuington
has for years been trying to
learn eomething of the characteristics
of the Atlantic ocean as a great
moving body of water by means of
t>ottles containing papers, which
have been dropped overboard from
ressels in many places to drift at
the mercy of the winds and waves.
Many of these bottles have been
found and picked up again cither in
the open sea or on shores where
thev had stranded.
Knowing from its records where
the bottles had been thrown overt>oard,
the bureau lias been able to
trace in a general way the path
they must have followed in order to
reach the places where they were
found.
Being partially filled with air and
then securely corked, the bottles
3oat on the surface of the water
ind go wherever the winds and the
rurrents of the sea carry them.
Bach bottle contains a record of the
? 1 5 i # IX. Xl O
?iace ana aate 01 its suu-img. ouuic
)f those found have floated for
nany months on the bosom of the
Atlantic and traveled thousands of
milea.
It has been ascertained that bottles
dropped overboard between the
ihores of the United States and
England or Prance generally travel
?waxd the northeast, following the
jourse of that great river in the
>cean called the gulf stream. Bottles
started off the coasts of Spain
)r Africa travel westward until
they arrive among the West India
islands. Along the European side
)f the ocean the bottles take a
southerly course and along the
American side a northerly course.
Thus as a result of winds and i
currents the whole Atlantic is
shown to be slowly circulating
iround and around, like an enormous
pool. This accounts for the
stories that were current in Europe
liundreds of years ago of strange
objects of human manufacture havng
floated from the new to the old
world, thus giving a clew to the existence
of undiscovered lands across
the sea.?Los Angeles Times.
Fire Caused by Sea Waves.
In spite of apparent impossibility
i fire was caused by water some few
rears ago on the western coast of
Ireland. The rocks along this coast,
which the huge Atlantic rollers
have for centuries been slowly
breaking down and piercing with
great caverns, contain in their
lepths masses of iron pyrites and
alum. At one part of the coast the
water penetrated to these, and a
rapid oxidization took place, which
produced a heat fierce enough to set
the whole cliff on fire. For weeks
the rocks burned like a regular volcano,
and great clouds of 6moke and
vapor rose high in the air. When
at last the fire died out, great
masses of lava and clay burned to
brick were found in every direction.
Th? Carnivorous Ants.
The subject of vegetarianism had
occupied a great deal of attention
in tne family. One day the fivefear-old
was out walking with his
elder sister, and he meddled somewhat
too freely with the affairs of
i large colony of ants. He deserted
them rather suddenly and came
back to his sister's side, rubbing his
bare legs vigorously.
"What's the matter V asked sister.
"Oh, nothing, only them ants
sin't vegetarians," was the sententious
reply of the youngster.
Kaolin.
The name kaolin is said to be
derived from a hill near Kingtih:hin,
in China, called Kaoling,
sphere the clay was first found in
considerable quantity. The kaolin
earth was first sent to Europe by. a
Jesuit missionery of Kingtihchin
about 1795. A similar clay was soon
afterward found near Schneeberg,
Germany, and used in the manufacture
of porcelain, thus laving the
foundation of the famous Dresden
ware. Kaolin i3 found in Nebraska
and in some of the eastern states.
Not to Blame.
Governor Oglesby once visited the
state penitentiary at Joliet to hear
complaints of prisoners and inspect
the premises. The governor stopped
before a cell containing an unusually
ugly man. "My man," Baid Governor
Oglesby pleasantly, "how did
you get here?" "For abducting a
girl," growled the man. Governor
Oglesby looked him over critically
and then said: "Well, I'll pardon
you as soon as I get back to Springfield.
You could not get a girl in
any other way!"
French and English Tastes.
How far does the great "healthy
British public" like to see exhibitions
of the horrible? Certainly not
like the French, for, although Paris
has abolished the publicity of the
morgue, a French company like the
Grand Guignol can go on year after
year, and French newspapers will
nublish nictures of the eoroses and
I J -? - I
.all that sort of thing as English
newspapers would not dare to do.
To call it "morbid" is begging the
question. It is simply different from
ourselves.?London Tatler.

Following the Cat.
"I can write," 6aid a little girl
aged five to her aunt when she
came in from school one day. "I'm
delighted to hear it," replied the
aunt. "And what can you write?"
"I can write cat and mat and bat,"
said the child. The aunt gave her
paper and pencil. <rWrite cat here

The child wrote the word fairly, but
put the letter C with its back to the
A. "That is very good," 6aid auntie,
"only look, dear, you have made the
C the wrong way." The child gazed
at the word for a moment. "But
the cat was going that way!" she
exclaimed.

Tennyson's Humility.
The poet Tennyson was gifted
with the craee of humility. TTift let
't O # *
ters disclose his dissatisfaction with
himself and his achievements. He
pitched his ideals high, and he
knew, none more clearly, when he
failed to grasp what he had reached
after. An anecdote contributed by
the Duke of Argyll and quoted by
Miss Cary in her volume, "Tennyson,"
exhibits the poet's humility.
"The first words I heard him utter,"
says the duke, "remain indelibly
impressed upon my memory. On
being introduced to him at an evening
party in the house of Lord John
Russell I said, perhaps with some
emotion:
" T am so glad to know you!'
"Not in the tone or voice of a
mere conventional reply, but in the
accents of sincere humility, he answered
:
"'You won't find much in me,
after all/ "

Bargains In Heathen Deities.
There is an old curiosity shop in
London which makes a specialty of
heathen deities. All kinds of images,
small and large, handsome,
hideous and grotesque, are on view.
You can choose an antique Aztec
god from Mexico, carved in heavy
stone and hideous enough to scare
a burglar; you can purchase a marble
deity from Mandalay, a wooden
atrocity from the Ju Ju land of
west Africa or a gilt joss from the
Chinese temple.
