OKLAHOMA STATE 1
A GARDEN SPOT.
ONE OF A PARTY OF SIGHT SEERS DESCRIBES
UNO OF BEAUTY
AND FERTILITY.
Editor County Record:?
On the 3rd inst., a party consistins
of South Carolinians and two
Georgians boarded the train in Augusta,
Ga., bound for Oklahoma
rr d Texaa._
Their missiotx was three-fold,
pleasuie, sight-seeing and business.

Mr J P Matheny of Blackwell,
Okla., had the party in charge.
"We spent one full afternoon in
# . Tulsa, Okla., and it is hard to believe
that this city is but six years
old. The streets are regularly laid
out and most of them are paved
with asphalt. Tulsa has a population
of 16,000 and is growing rapidly.
There is now in course of erection
$300,000 worth of buildings.
Her taxable returns for 1908 were
$8,925,000. She has seven good
hotels, one of which cost $110,000
to build. She has seven large brick
churches and several banks. Nearly
all the business bouses are built
of brick and the dwellings are neat
and comfortable.
Her public school buildings are
equal to and in some respects superior
to any in the United States in
point of comfort and convenience.
Oklahoma has 3,000,000 acres of
land set apart for school purposes.
This land she rents for $1 per acre,
which brings in an amount large
enough to run her schools for nine
months in the year and furnish
text books free. There is not a
drinking saloon in the State and no
liquor to be had. Those people who
say that ''prohibition does not prohibit"
ought to go to Oklahoma and
get convinced.
We visited several towns in Oklahoma
and all of them are of marvelously
rapid growth. Among
them were Euid,Washville, Sapulpa
and El Reno. The soil is the richest
in the world and inmost auy crop
can be grown with profit. Corn,
wheat, alfalfa, hay and cotton are
the principal crops raised.
Millious of cattle,horses and hogs
are shipped East. Near Tulsa and
Sapulpa are the oil wells. The coal
mines in this section are rich in de*
posit and are being worked with
great profit. ?Ve saw numbers of
oil tanks along the line of railway
holding 2,000,000 gallons each.
Many of the Indians are getting
$150 a week royalty from their
claims.
The great Creator seems to have
favored Okalahoma, as her soil is so
fertile and her mineral deposits so
* bountiful. About 30 miles from
Enid there is a salt deposit covering
35,000 acres of land and it has been
probed for more than 100 feet deep
with no diminution of salt. This
State is being rapidly settled with the
best people from all the States. In
Enid, a city of 15,000 people (only
16 years old), we failed to see a poI
liceman. On inquiry we learned that
* there were three and they had but
little to do.
From Oklahoma we ran down to
San Antonio and spent one day. San
Antonio is the oldest, the most cosmopolitan,
the most historic, the most
unique city in the Southwest. It
was with peculiar pleasure we visited
the old missions and the Alamo.
While within the walls of the Ala.
mo we felt a peculiar awe as we were

was in 1630 Travis sent to the provisional
government for reenforce- I
ments with his immortal declaration:
"I shall never retreat or surrender."
Travis, with his 145 men, resisted Santa
Anna with 6,000 picked mm. j
Every Texan was killed, among them ,
the brave Bowie, Dayie Crockett and <
Bonham. ,
There is an underground tunnel .
connecting the Alamo with one of }
the mission houses. This tunnel ,

A place of great interest is Port 1
Sam Houston. This is the second j
largest post in the United States, }
and. is soon to be the largest. There j
aie so many places of interest in and
around San Antonio that it is im- j
practical to speak of them here. 1 j
will, however, speak of the famous ^
hot wells. These wells are said to
possess medicinal qualities equal to .

It does seem that women have ]
more tnan a fair share of the aches .
and pains that afflict humanity;they .
must "keep up," must attend to ,
duties in spite of constant aching ,
backs, or headaches, dizzy spells, |
bearing-down pains; they must stoop
over, when to stoop means torture. ,
They must walk and bend and work .
with rackiug pains and many aches
from kidney ills. Kidneys cause |
more suffering than any other organ 1
of the body. Keep the kidneys well *
and health is easily maintained. *
Head of a remedy for kidneys only

Miss Follie Vause, Logan street,
Kingstiee, S. C, savs: "I used
Doan's Kidney Pills and they bene- '
fited me more than anything I ever
tried. My back and kidneys caused I
me a great deal of misery for years. |
Headaches and dizzy spells occurred
frequently and i was ootnerea ai
all times by the irregular action of
the kidneys. Doan's Kidney Pills
which I procured at Scott's drug
